Role Summary
The Associate Commissioner for Strategic Communications and Broadcasting serves as the conference’s senior communications and broadcast executive to develop and executive strategic communications and broadcast intitiatives, storytelling, and lead all aspects of linear and digital broadcasting efforts. Working collaboratively across the conference office, member institutions, media partners, and commercial partners, this position develops and executes integrated strategies that enhance audience engagement, strengthen the Conference brand, expand exposure opportunities, and support broader organizational priorities including fan growth, sponsorship activation, and revenue generation. This position collaborates closely with the Social Media Content team to implement national communications/storytelling strategies across all platforms. The position requires an innovative and forward-thinking communications leader to execute a year-round media strategy with an emphasis on men’s basketball and consistent attention to the conference brand. Technical broadcasting awareness, familiarity with working with national media partners and established relationships with national sports and broadast communicators including key basketball media and influential national voices is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications:
- Lead the Conference’s strategic communications, media relations, and storytelling initiatives to advance institutional, athletic, and brand objectives
- Lead media operations and coverage strategy overall and for key events including West Coast Conference Pre-Season Basketball Event, West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament and all Conference Championship Events.
- Integrate available technology platforms to enhance production and distribution methods.
- Assure all front-facing assets – website, online record book, media notes, NCAA selection committee notes, new releases, statistic compilation and feature content are accurate, timely and best espouse the attributes of the West Coast Conference.
- Amplify and pitch the West Coast Conference position as a premier Division I conference on all issues of national collegiate import, particularly those involving men’s basketball.
- Serve as WCC spokesperson, when appropriate.
- Create thought-leadership opportunities for commissioner and campus executives nationally.
- Collaborate with athletic and university communication offices to amplify West Coast Conference and membership news and initiatives.
- Generate innovative exposure for the Conference and its programs through effective media relations including traditional outlets and emerging platforms.
- Monitor and evaluate media exposure, audience engagement, and communications effectiveness through established performance metrics.
- Other duties, including Commissioner-delegated projects and championships support, as assigned.
- Manage Commissioner’s Cup administration and WCC awards process.
Broadcasting:
- Serve as the Conference’s primary liaison to media rights partners and broadcasters in the development and execution of linear and digital broadcast schedules.
- Ensure institutional compliance with all broadcast media rights agreements and actively seek opportunities to enhance broadcast opportunities.
- Responsible for all West Coast Conference Championship productions.
- Primary liaison for campus and national broadcast managers and talent to enhance promotion of conference teams and student-athletes.
- Oversee and collaborate with the designated sports administrator on the development of Conference television schedules ensuring compliance with scheduling guidelines.
- Manage relationships with independent contractors.
- Conduct site surveys as needed for conference events.
Compliance:
- Ensure conference operations in area of responsibility comply with NCAA and WCC policies.
Governance:
- Primary liaison for External Affairs Cabinet, Campus Sports Communicators and University Communicators, Broadcast Production Managers.
- Provide support to the WCC governance structure, as assigned (e.g., Executive Council, Presidents’ Council).
Student Athlete:
- Ensure Student-Athlete experience and well-being is a priority in all Conference initiatives.
Supervision
Manage, supervise and develop assigned staff and independent contractors.
Travel Requirements
25 – 50% of travel
Work Location
Hybrid with San Bruno, CA base.
Salary
$120,000 – $160,000 commensurate with experience.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or advanced/professional degree(s) preferred.
Knowledge of technical broadcasting hardware and software.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in sports communications or a related field.
Leadership experience required.
Experience in intercollegiate athletics is preferred.
