The Western Athletic Conference is accepting applications for a Communications Intern. The WAC is an NCAA Division I league relocating our offices to Arlington, Texas. The member institutions are Abilene Christian University; California Baptist University; Grand Canyon University; Lamar University; New Mexico State University; Sam Houston State University; Seattle University; Southern Utah University, Stephen F. Austin State University; Tarleton State University; The University of Texas at Arlington; The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; Utah Tech University and Utah Valley University. The WAC crowns team and individual champions in 20 sports – 10 men’s and 10 women’s.
General Responsibilities:
The communications intern will assist with publicizing the WAC through all platforms including social media and the conference website. Specific duties include writing and producing press releases, compiling statistics, reporting results to media, maintaining record books, serving as communications contact for several assigned sports and compiling host and team manuals for select championships.
This position will also assist staff members in the administration of selected conference activities and on-site championship management. Job includes travel to select championships, plus some nights and weekends. Other responsibilities may include tasks assigned by the Associate Commissioner of Communications, Assistant Commissioner of Communications and Assistant Director of Communications.
Desired qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree required with a major in communications, journalism, or a related field
- Strong working knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, intercollegiate athletics
- A minimum of one year of practical experience in media relations
- Must be able to work independently and in a team setting to efficiently meet established goals and deadlines
- Proficient with InDesign and Photoshop
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a detailed manner
Salary: $2,000 per month
Dates: August 15, 2022 through May 31, 2023
