Binghamton University’s Athletics Department and University Counseling Center seek a full-time, 12-month renewable position with benefits for a Senior Counselor, Athletics Specialist providing mental health counseling and outreach services to Division I student-athletes. This is a generalist position with strong preference for candidates who have experience in a collegiate athletics setting. Duties of the position include short-term, individual and group counseling, crisis work, clinical assessment, consultation, liaison/consultant relationship, and psychoeducation. The focus will be on generalist mental health issues such as substance use, stress and anxiety, personal or relationship concerns, mild to moderate mental health issues, and development or academic concerns. There will also be clinical and outreach focus on student athlete specific issues such as sport performance, injury rehabilitation, and student-athlete identity development. While the position is primarily clinical, this position will provide some outreach and psycho-educational workshops to student-athletes and athletics staff. This position will report directly to the University Counseling Center with dotted line reporting to the Director of Athletics. -Master's degree in mental health or related field, licensure or eligibility for licensure to practice in New York.
-Broad "generalist" clinical competence in assessing and intervening with a wide range of disorders, concerns, and degree of pathology. Experience or willingness to use a brief therapy model of care.
-Knowledge and understanding of the unique needs and challenges of the college student-athlete population.
-Ability to handle a busy caseload in a dynamic environment, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to collaborate.
-Multicultural awareness, knowledge, understanding, responsiveness, and skills to work with culturally diverse populations.
-Willingness to work within a brief therapy model.
-Proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions.
-Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.

-Team-oriented, "user-friendly" to students and university staff.
-Availability and willingness to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities.
-LCSW credential, LMHC, or Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or related field. ABD's will be considered; post-doctoral supervision for licensure can be provided.
-Experience as a collegiate student-athlete or coach.
-Expertise in psychological issues related to student athletes such as performance enhancement, athletics consultations, student athlete identity development, and/or injury and rehabilitation in competitive athletics.
-Experience in a higher education counseling center and/or with young adults in a clinical setting.
-NY state CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) credential, or eligibility for this credential based on qualifications in another state.
-Expertise in one or more of the following areas: stress management, depression and/or emotion regulation, anxiety, grief, or identity crisis.
-Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
Knowledge of NCAA rules, including adherence to professional, legal ethical and professional standards endorsed by licensing organizations.
