The Head Cheerleading Coach provides leadership in all coaching, recruiting, and administrative duties for Howard University’s cheer program. The individual reports to the Department of Student Affairs and Athletics.
Essential Job Functions:
• Organize, prepare, and conduct practices and trainings
• Lead, monitor, and coordinate training and practice sessions, ensuring all appropriate safety guidelines are followed
• Represent the program and Howard University to students, parents, community, alumni, and the public
• Manage the daily operations and administrative facets of the cheer program
• Establish team standards, expectations, values, and culture that align with the University
• Attend continuing education to stay up to date on safety, skills, and technique
• Ensure team members receive proper training before attempting gymnastics or partnered stunts
• Work in conjunction with members of Student Affairs and Athletic Administration regarding staffing needs, strategic budgeting, fundraising, alumni development, and program promotion
• Initiate and coordinate an increased level of community outreach endeavors
• Serve as support for the dance team
• Actively participate in department-wide initiatives
• Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to a diverse academic community, fostering an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from a variety of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds
• Other duties as assigned by Student Affairs and Athletics
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with previous cheer experience as a coach or participant is required.
CPR, AED, and First-Aid certifications will be required prior to first practice date.
Relevant certifications for cheer.
