The Assistant Women's Basketball Coach plays a key role in advancing a Christ-centered, competitive NCAA Division II women's basketball program. In alignment with Vanguard University's mission to provide a Christ-centered education that equips students for a life of service and leadership this position is responsible for fostering the holistic development of student-athletes through the intentional integration of faith, learning, and competition.
The Assistant Coach supports all aspects of the program, including recruiting, student-athlete development, academic success, and spiritual formation. This position reports to the Head Women's Basketball Coach.
POSITION DUTIES
Program Development & Christ-Centered Culture
Partner with the Head Coach to cultivate a team environment that reflects Vanguard University's commitment to Christ-centered education, service, and leadership.
Model Christ-like character, integrity, and servant leadership in all interactions.
Contribute to building a program that pursues excellence in competition while prioritizing the development of the whole person-spiritually, academically, athletically, and socially.
Spiritual Formation & Discipleship
Intentionally integrate faith and learning within the basketball program, supporting Vanguard's mission of developing students for lives of service and leadership.
Encourage and facilitate student-athlete engagement in spiritual growth opportunities, including chapel, team devotionals, service initiatives, and campus ministry.
Mentor student-athletes in their faith journey, promoting biblical values and spiritual maturity.
Academic Success & Student Development
Support the academic progress of student-athletes in alignment with Vanguard's educational mission.
Promote accountability in academic performance, class attendance, and degree completion.
Collaborate with campus resources to ensure student-athletes are equipped for success beyond athletics.
Recruiting & Enrollment Partnership
Recruit prospective student-athletes who align with Vanguard University's mission, values, and expectations for academic achievement, character, and spiritual engagement.
Partner with Admissions to support enrollment efforts and ensure a seamless recruitment process.
Build strong relationships with high school, junior college, and club programs.
Ensure all recruiting activities comply with NCAA, Pacific West Conference, and institutional policies and are documented appropriately.
Competition & Coaching Excellence
Assist in planning and conducting practices, game preparation, and skill development.
Promote a standard of competitive excellence consistent with NCAA Division II philosophy and Vanguard's values.
Lead practices and competitions in the absence of the Head Coach.
Operations & Administration
Assist with program operations, including travel, scheduling, equipment, camps/clinics and compliance documentation.
Support budget management in alignment with university policies.
Maintain accurate and timely administrative records, including expense reporting.
Compliance & Integrity
Demonstrates a commitment to NCAA Division II, Pacific West Conference, and Vanguard University rules and regulations.
Promote a culture of integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct.
Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with compliance standards and best practices.
Service, Engagement & Fundraising
Actively support Vanguard University's emphasis on service by engaging in community outreach and service opportunities.
Contribute to fundraising initiatives that support the mission and sustainability of the program.
Build meaningful relationships with alumni, donors, and the broader Vanguard community.
Collaboration & Institutional Engagement
Foster strong, collaborative relationships across campus departments.
Participate in Athletic Department meetings and university initiatives.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Bachelor's degree.
Minimum of two years of coaching or relevant experience.
CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail.
Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and developing student-athletes holistically.
Understanding of FERPA regulations and commitment to confidentiality.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and team management platforms (e.g. Teamworks).
Demonstrated commitment to the Christian faith and the mission, values, and Statement of Faith of Vanguard University required, including evidence of personal discipleship and a lifestyle consistent with the University's Christ-centered community standards.
Preferred
Master's degree.
Three or more years of coaching or relevant experience.
NCAA Division II coaching and/or playing experience.
SALARY
This is a full-time, Exempt, 12-month position.
Expected Pay Range: $70,304 - $71,000
Placement within the salary range is commensurate upon education and experience. Posted salary range reflects anticipated hiring scale for the position. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package.
