The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking to hire an on-campus full-time Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach/ Assistant Cross Country Coach.
The Head Men’s and Women’s Track Coach is a 12-month position that reports directly to the Executive Director of Athletics. This position will serve as the Head Men’s and Women’s Track teams and assume all duties of a head coach at the NCAA Division III level. This position will assist with other departmental needs as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Serve as the head coach for the Track & Field programs. This will include the addition of Indoor Track & Field as the university continues to explore expanding sport offerings at UMPI. • Collaborate and work closely with the Head Cross Country Coach. • Recruit and retain student-athletes, ensuring healthy roster sizes for Track & Field and Cross Country that meet or exceed NCAA minimum requirements annually. • Help coordinate and oversee home meets for both Cross Country and Track & Field. • Communicate and coordinate effectively with other university departments and external partners as necessary. • Represent the department and university in interactions with both internal and external stakeholders, including attendance at professional meetings, special events, public functions, and committee service. • Serve as the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). • Assist with game management duties and other game event responsibilities as assigned. • Serve on university or departmental committees as assigned. • Provide coverage at Gentile Hall during the off-season, as needed. • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities of the Head Coach shall include, but are not limited to the following: • Daily coaching (practice and meets)
o Utilize current and specific theory and techniques toward optimally training student-athletes to reach their fullest potential. o Teach appropriate skills, game/competition tactics, and strategies, while using effective techniques for skill and movement analysis. o Make appropriate coaching decisions during competitions. o Develop positive interpersonal relationships with student-athletes and personnel involved with the program, including alumni. o Acquire specific practice/training and competition plans. o Motivate, discipline, and lead athletes toward their highest possible achievements. o Develop a positive, professional relationship with game/competition officials, league personnel and coaching colleagues. o Maintain a disciplined team in both conduct and appearance, on and off the field. o Preserve professional conduct, demeanor, and appearance. • Build the athletic program/team through recruiting. o Establish a recruiting plan for identifying, contacting, and communicating with high school and transfer athletes. o Conduct on-campus visits for potential student-athletes. o Establish public relations link both locally and state-wide to increase the visibility of the program and university. o Work toward a recruitment goal as discussed with supervisor and in collaboration with Admissions.
• Anticipated athlete and team outcome o Contribute to providing the overall student-athlete experience for all UMPI Student Athletes. o Improvement over the course of the season, or from previous seasons assed on a year-by-year basis. o Attain team and individual athlete accomplishment in relation to their potential. o Strive for participation in playoffs, conference championships, and being amongst the top half of Division III programs in the state. o Attempt for satisfaction of team members and team cohesiveness. o Maintain and disseminate statistics and related information as required and requested.
• Administrative tasks associated with coaching. o Being accountable for all financial matters and reporting of expenses related to travel, equipment, and other team expenses. o Plan for preseason, season, and postseason. o Attend meetings related to sport. o Monitor athletic eligibility and academic standing. o Be punctual with paperwork and receipts. o Define a competitive NCAA Division IIII schedule within budget constraints. o Conduct team fundraisers. o Adhere to university and NCAA policies and procedures. • Public relations and professional development
o Pursue the development of relationship with the local media. o Serve on committees as needed. o Conduct or attend summer camps. o Coordinate community service opportunities for team. o Become involved with professional association(s). o Upgrade education or certifications. o Attend clinics, classes, and/or conferences. o Meet with parents.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Track assistant coaches & game day work study students. Requirements: • Education: Bachelor’s Degree • Previous track coaching experience or related experience. • Equitable appreciation of all sports. • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to deal with a variety of people in a courteous, tactful, and efficient manner. • Ability to work nights, weekends, and some holidays. • Possess superior organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and have the ability to meet tight deadlines. • Ability to recruit, retain, and maintain healthy sports rosters to meet sport sponsorship. • Ability to meet University Motor Pool driving requirements. Knowledge and Skills: ? Equitable appreciation of all sports. ? Excellent communication skills, with the ability to deal with a variety of people in a courteous, tactful, and efficient manner. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred: ? Experience working with student-athletes in an academic setting. ? Previous NCAA coaching experience. ? Previous collegiate playing experience. ? Familiarity with NCAA standards, rules, and regulations. Working Conditions: ? Schedule: Varies and includes working nights, weekends and some holidays. ? Travel: Must have the ability to travel for extended amounts of time for athletic contests and work in unpleasant climates/weather at times. Schedule for Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated at six months and annually thereafter based on start date.
