This role is responsible for directing and overseeing the day-to-day fiscal operations of Intercollegiate Athletics providing expertise in financial planning and policy, resource allocation, budget preparation and review, and data management and analysis. Additionally responsible for overseeing employment transactions/contracts and serving as a liaison with Human Resources related to hiring, employee relations, engagement and performance matters. This role will provide input into the department’s strategic planning and resource allocation decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Forecast and manage budget for Intercollegiate Athletics including unrestricted, temporarily restricted, discretionary funds and endowment accounts. Work directly with coaches and other sports administrators who develop and manage functional area budgets and expenses. Approve purchases, contracts, stipends, travel expenses and payments. Oversee revenue accounts. Monitor financial performance and implement corrective measures as needed.
2. Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the mission, vision, and goals. Lead the development of financial forecasts, long-term financial plans, and business plans aimed at furthering strategic goals. Develop financial models and assist with strategic budget planning. Collaborate with Athletic leadership to develop and execute strategic plan and evaluate options to ensure alignment. Provide data, analysis, and regular and ad hoc reports for the Athletic Director to support planning and data needs.
3. Provide oversight and budgetary direction for staff hiring including but not limited to establishing salary budgets based on the university salary structure for athletic positions. Work with Human Resources to update job descriptions, provide oversight for recruitment and onboarding of new athletic staff, oversee employment transactions and contracts, oversee the annual performance appraisal and merit process for Athletics, and serve as a liaison with Human Resources and athletic leadership/supervisors related to employee relations, engagement and performance matters.
4. Supervise staff, which includes but is not limited to hiring, terming, disciplinary actions, performance management, staff development, etc.
5. Design, recommend, implement, and evaluate approved policies, procedures and systems to ensure the effective operation of the various functions in the department. Maintain compliance with all University and external policies, regulations, and laws. Serve as a resource to interpret and assist with university and Athletics policies and procedures. Establish and maintain financial controls within the university finance structure.
6. Collaborate with the Finance Department to complete audits and required NCAA reporting.
7. Oversee external vendors regarding quotes, purchases, contracts, etc.
8. Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field.
A minimum of 8 years of related financial experience.
Experience in financial management, accounting and/or complex budget development and management.
Strategic planning experience and abilities.
Self-starter with ability to work effectively independently and take initiative as needed.
Strong data analysis, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong collaboration skills, ability to build and maintain relationships, ability to work with wide variety of constituents, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with senior level executives.
Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Responsive and timely in responding to requests.
Strong computer competency to include Microsoft Office Professional Suite and demonstrated proficiency in the advanced features of Excel and Oracle E-Business Suite Applications.
Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain accurate documentation and records system.
