Job Description SummaryThe Defensive Coordinator at the University of La Verne will serve as a key member of the football coaching staff, reporting directly to the Head Football Coach. This position is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of the defensive strategy and game plans for the football program, which includes on-field coaching, practice planning, game strategy, player development, and the academic and personal growth of over 100 student-athletes. The Defensive Coordinator will assist in managing all aspects of the football program, with a primary focus on the defense, as determined by the Head Coach. This role involves mentoring student-athletes, assisting with recruitment, and contributing to the overall success of the team through preparation, motivation, and strategic planning. Additionally, the Defensive Coordinator will oversee graduate assistants and part-time coaching staff to ensure the smooth operation of the coaching structure. The role requires close collaboration with the Head Coach and other staff to ensure that all activities align with the goals and vision of the program.
Minimum Qualifications
4 years demonstrated successful football coaching and/or recruiting experience at the college or university level.
4 years' experience in college athletics.
Ability to organize and operate an effective football program while motivating and mentoring student-athletes. Includes (but not limited to) 3 years of collegiate football coaching experience, budget, team travel, inventory, equipment, uniforms, scheduling, fundraising, student-athlete academic progress, alumni relations, and rules compliance experience.
Ability to stay abreast of current and developing trends (video, voice, data, and computing technologies).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks and personnel simultaneously.
Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communications across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to race, gender, sexual preference/identity, physical limitations, class or religious perspectives.
Enthusiasm and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change and high pressure.
Ability to travel and recruit student athletes.

Master's Degree
At least one year supervising and training employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling.

Physical Demands Summary College football coaches have moderate to high physical demands, including extended periods of standing, walking, and active engagement in physical activities. They may need to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects and stand or walk for long periods, often more than four hours per day. Duties Specific Duties COACHING and GAME PLANNING
Develop and implement practice plans, drills, and individual development programs to enhance player skills and team performance.
Serve as the Defensive Coordinator, overseeing the design and execution of strategic plays for the assigned side of the ball.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and other staff to develop effective game strategies, in-game adjustments, and tactical plans.
Provide individual coaching for student-athletes to improve their athletic skills and football knowledge. Percentage Of Time - 25%
Specific Duties RECRUITMENT, RETENTION and ENROLLMENT
Lead efforts to recruit high-quality student-athletes by scouting talent, building relationships with high school coaches, and representing the program at recruitment events.
Assist with the identification, evaluation, and recruitment of prospective student-athletes who fit within the University's academic and athletic standards.
Maintain relationships with recruits, student-athletes, and their families to ensure successful enrollment, transition, and retention.
Track and monitor the academic, athletic, and social development of student-athletes to ensure their success both on the field and in the classroom.
Collaborate with the admissions department to ensure that prospective student-athletes are guided through the enrollment process. Percentage Of Time - 30%
Specific Duties OFF-SEASON and PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Oversee the off-season development of student-athletes, focusing on skill-building, strength and conditioning, and preparation for the upcoming season.
Design and implement training programs that will enhance players' skills, strength, and overall performance.
Manage and supervise all spring practices, ensuring a focus on player development, conditioning, and team building.
Assist in evaluating players' progress and development, identifying areas for improvement as the team transitions into the next season. Percentage Of Time - 15%
Specific Duties COLLABORATION
Collaborate closely with athletic training staff to monitor the health, wellness, and safety of student-athletes, including injury prevention, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols.
Work with strength & conditioning staff to ensure the development of appropriate fitness and performance programs tailored to football needs.
Coordinate with the athletics communication team to promote the football program, manage media relationships, and assist with social media content development.
Build strong relationships with athletic department staff and University entities (such as alumni relations, admissions) to maximize the football program's visibility, support, and success. Percentage Of Time - 10%
Specific Duties ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES and COMPLIANCE Assist with administrative duties such as travel coordination, scheduling, and team meetings as assigned by the Head Coach.
Ensure all activities and practices are in compliance with NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
Assist with home events such as, but not limited to: Home game supervision, Senior Blanket Night, Hall of Fame, SCIAC, and NCAA Championship events.
Assist with department and University coordination of Alumni events.
Abide by and comply with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and SCIAC rules, academic standards, requirements, and policies of the University, and all guidelines and policies of the Athletics department. Report any concerns of compromise or violation of rules, standards, guidelines, or policies to the Director of Athletics, Deputy Director, or Compliance & Student Services Manager.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, or a designee assigned by the Director of Athletics. Percentage Of Time - 5%
Specific Duties GRADUATE ASSISTANT/PART-TIME STAFF SUPERVISION
Supervise and mentor graduate assistants and part-time coaches, ensuring effective practice management, team development, and alignment with program goals.
Provide guidance on best coaching practices and help foster a collaborative and effective coaching environment. Percentage Of Time - 5%
Specific Duties FUNDRAISING and PROGRAM SUPPORT
Assist with fundraising efforts for the football program and the athletics department by supporting fundraising initiatives, organizing events, and engaging alumni and the community.
Participate in efforts to secure financial support for team needs, including travel, equipment, and scholarships.
Collaborate with the athletic department, alumni relations, and development team to strengthen relationships with alumni and enhance financial support for the football program. Percentage Of Time - 5%
Specific Duties GAMEDAY and IN-SEASON
Assist in the preparation for and management of home and away games, including team logistics, game strategy, and in-game adjustments.
Provide leadership during games, making real-time strategic decisions and ensuring overall team performance.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and staff to assess team performance and implement improvements for future competitions. Percentage Of Time - 5%
