Location: On-campus, in person with limited remote work opportunities
SUMMARY The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for managing all aspects of athletic training services to maintain the optimal health and well-being of the athletes and is responsible for the Health and Wellness oversight of the student-athletes’ experience. The Head Trainer also serves as the Athletic department's designated Health Care Administrator and oversees all aspects of a comprehensive collegiate athletic training program consisting of 16 sports and the respective participants. Responsibilities include all aspects of screening, prevention, and care of sports related injuries and conditions for all student-athletes; ensuring coverage of all practices and home contests; and maintaining updated CPR certification records for the coaching staff. The incumbent also maintains confidential files and medical records; coordinates clinical and physician appointments; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; and assists the Director of Athletics with budget and management of all sports medicine expenditures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the individual holding this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties: •Provide leadership to the Athletic Training staff. •Provide Athletic Training staff schedule to Director of Athletics two months in advance of each (Fall/Winter/Spring) athletic team’s coverage. •Oversee the selection, purchase, and maintenance of athletic training equipment and medical supplies. Submit equipment and budget requests to the Director of Athletics. •Update Athletic Training information in Student-Athlete Handbook yearly. •Provide emergency medical attention and determine appropriate course of action. •Evaluate injuries sustained by the athletes. Apply appropriate medical care, including tape, special orthotic pads, braces, etc. •Provide detailed Weekly Insurance – Student-Athlete Insurance progress updates. •Facilitate pre-participation screening including Impact concussion testing for all sports. •Facilitate NCAA and institutional drug testing and NCAA drug education programming. •Develop and implement rehabilitative programs. •Coordinate rehab fitness programs in consultation with the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. •Organize and implement pre-participation physical examinations. Collect and maintain all required medical documentation and coordinate secondary insurance requirements per NCAA rules. •Maintain health care records of all student -athletes through an online platform. Currently utilizing Sports Ware OnLine. •Manage student-athletes insurance and billing claims in a timely fashion. •Serve as primary liaison between William Peace University and the team physician as well as secondary insurance. •Identify and correct common risk factors and conditions predisposing the athletes to increased risk of injury. •Coordinate all NCAA and USA South certifications of the coaching staff and keep records updated. •Attend practices and home games for a designated sport(s) for Fall, Winter and Spring sports. •Travel to away playoff games based upon availability as arranged with Athletic Director and coaching staff. •Attend all USA South meetings as required by Department and/or Conference. •Actively participate in campus wide committees as requested. •Assist with the implementation of new and returning Student-Athlete Orientation each year. •Provide Action Plans for all Facilities used by WPU athletic department programs. •Advocate issues important to student-athletes, coaches, and staff. •Educate individuals on current and updated health and wellness issues. •Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations (NACWAA, NACDA and others per USA South and NCAA). •Maintain Athletic Training Certification by taking accredited Continuing Education Units and monitor certification status of athletic training staff. •Work effectively with a diverse population of students, employees, families, and guests. •Assist with other administrative duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES •Supervise the Athletic Training Staff. Monitor work-study and interns as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS Candidates who apply within established recruitment dates are required to meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for employment. Minimum qualifications are the absolute smallest amount of experience and education that provide the ability to determine if the candidate could potentially perform well in the position. Preferred are the qualifications that enable a candidate to potentially excel in the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in athletic training or related field with two years of related experience.
Requires ATABOC Certification, NC State Athletic Trainer Licensure, or eligibility to receive licensure within 3 months of hire; CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent; and knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Financial Aid & Collection Laws; higher education experience; and knowledge of Datatel/Ellucian’s Colleague software and Blackboard a plus.
Experience supervising Athletic Training staff and/or students.
AED, CPR and First Aid certification per NCAA regulations. Certification by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification. Licensed, or eligible for state licensure, by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Training Examiners. All registrations are required by the NCAA and USA South Athletic Conference.
