GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Track and Field – Cross Country position requires all functions usually associated with an intercollegiate athletic program and will be bound by the university and the athletic department mission statements.
SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 1. Coaching and management of all practice sessions and program-associated events. 2. Have a sound knowledge and adherence to NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference rules and regulations. 3. Understand and support the mission, policies, and regulations of Wayland Baptist University. 3. Schedule competitions and related events. 4. Understand and excel in the coaching techniques and strategies for track and field – cross country. 5. Monitor the team’s academic performance and create internal support for academic success. 6. Budget management, organization, and oversight. 7. Recruit a quality of student-athlete that can compete at the highest level both academically and athletically. 8. Recruit a quantity of student-athletes that will support the enrollment goals of the University and the program. 9. Support the department's mission and structure, which will include managing a nationally competitive roster. 10. Complete and respond promptly to all requests from the Athletic and University administration regarding policy, procedures, and management of the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field – Cross Country programs. 11. Learn about and embrace the amazing history of Wayland Baptist University’s Track and Field – Cross Country program. 12. Purchase and maintain equipment and supplies. 13. Participate in department event preparations as needed. 14. Cultivate positive campus and community relations. 15. Effectively participate in the marketing and financial development of the program. 16. Hire, supervise, and lead a quality coaching staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Master’s Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
Applicants must currently be active in the field with college-level playing and coaching experience preferred.

1. A commitment to a Christian lifestyle and coaching from a Christian perspective is essential.
2. Applicants should have proven integrity, leadership skills, and the ability to motivate students to be successful academically and athletically.
3. Applicants should possess good interpersonal skills, communicate effectively with all members of the campus community, and demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse population.
Wayland Baptist University was established in 1908 by pioneer physician Dr. James Henry Wayland, who believed that education should be accessible to all and that it should be grounded in faith in Christ. Wayland is the oldest institution of higher education in continuous existence on the High Plains of Texas.
Wayland competes in the NAIA Division I as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference and the Central States Football League. Intercollegiate teams for men and women include cross country, track and field, soccer, basketball, and diving, golf, cheer and dance, and Wayland is the first university in the state of Texas to compete in men’s and women’s wrestling. Wayland also competes in baseball, football, and women’s volleyball.
