Serve as an academic advisor for Football student-athletes. Work with other Purdue professionals to maximize student access and success at Purdue. Create Cognos reports and analyze data as necessary. May organize and schedule programming for Football student-athletes. Ensure all University, Big Ten, and NCAA policies, rules and regulations are adhered to. Student Advising (75%) -Monitor the academic performance of Football student-athletes, including eligibility and progress toward graduation. Assist assigned student-athletes with course selection, navigating Banner/myPurduePlan and the registration system. Meet regularly with students having academic difficulty. As appropriate, provide guidance about graduate/professional school; career/internship opportunities and the job search process; provide assistance during major and career exploration, and discuss opportunities with students wishing to change their major to another school/college. Interpret and apply university policies and procedures, as well as Big Ten and NCAA regulations, keeping abreast of changes. Administration (10%) -Complete necessary paperwork and forms for proper maintenance of student records. Compile reports as required by the Big Ten, NCAA, and Purdue University. Prepare reports/communicate concerns regarding assigned student-athletes to coaches as agreed upon. Participate in staff & department-wide meetings. Communicate scheduling issues to appropriate designee for assigned teams. Submit class schedules to the bookstore as necessary for assigned student-athletes. Prepare travel letters for assigned student-athletes. Maintain certifications related to handling student data (e.g. FERPA, GLBA). Communication (10%) -Respond to emails and phone calls from students, family members, university faculty and staff. Build and maintain contacts with other College/Department advising units and programs, offices, and peer institutions to maximize "best practices" and strategies. Communicate with students regarding curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Make explicit students’ responsibility for their own academic and professional success. Recruiting (5%) -Meet with prospective student-athletes and their parents to review athletic academic services and facilities. Confer with prospective transfer students and appropriate campus entities regarding application of transfer credits and course equivalencies. Complete initial eligibility reviews for incoming freshmen.
Bachelor’s degree required. 1 year of relevant experience with student advising or student services preferred.
Must have a strong interest in providing academic and personal support to student-athletes; excellent oral, written and presentation skills, strong work ethic and self-starter, organizational skills and great attention to detail. Working in the field of student-athlete support services is not limited to the traditional work week, therefore the candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including some evening and weekends. Planning, problem solving, organizational, analytical, and customer service skills. Interpersonal skills in dealing sensitively with a wide variety of constituents necessary. Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels. Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet established deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Working knowledge and accountability for NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and Purdue University regulations and submitting documentation as required to the Athletics Compliance Office. Working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and recruiting rules/procedures. Personal computer and related software skills, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, etc., necessary.
