The University of Charleston is an NCAA Division II institution that offers twenty intercollegiate sports (10 men's/10 women's) and is a Mountain East Conference (MEC) member. UC has been awarded the Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup for athletic excellence among MEC schools for seven out of the last nine years. The men's soccer program has won the NCAA National Championship twice, ending the 2019 season ranked #1 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches Association. Additionally, UC men's volleyball is a member of a Division I Conference, the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. The HB Wehrle Arena opened in 2017, with the Welch Athletic Complex following in 2019, providing elite facilities for many of the University's athletic programs. The nickname/mascot is the Golden Eagles, with the school colors of maroon and gold.
