We maintain 17 parks consisting of 850 acres which offer organized and open recreation, picnic areas, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, tennis, basketball, various ball fields including Hillcats Stadium, large public pool, splash pads, and children’s play areas. Over 40 miles of trail wind through Lynchburg and are suited for a variety of activity including walking, mountain biking, hiking, and running. Community residents enjoy the use of nine recreation centers which are utilized for planned group programs, meetings, and outdoor amenities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties necessary to deliver services to customers and citizens may be assigned.
Develops, implements, publicizes and evaluates programs to meet the overall program needs.
Plans, directs, promotes, and supervises recreational programs.
Conducts program evaluations and participates in program and departmental planning initiatives.
Coordinates and develops programs in cooperation with other recreation services staff.
Assists in planning and supervising summer camps and recreational classes.
Assists with developing and interpreting departmental and program policy.
Assists in training and educating staff, organizing and participating in orientations.
Assists Athletics and Aquatics Coordinator in hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining staff.
Assists in supervising aquatic facilities, gymnasium and athletics field scheduling and schedules all non-school use of Lynchburg City School athletic facilities and fields.
Proactive approach to issues.
Provides administrative support for program information, registering participants, receiving and receipting money, preparing financial reports, maintaining records, and compiling and interpreting statistical data.
Supervises staff as directed by the Athletics and Aquatics Coordinator.
Instructs classes and activities.
Establishes and maintains good communication networks with participants, spectators and supervisors.
Promotes the department and program area; participating in public relations activities.
Publicizes upcoming events and programs through the media and community groups.
Writes marketing materials for departmental newsletters, press releases and brochures.
Supports program partners, attends meetings and assists with coordination of facility use.
Coordinates programs with program partners.
Assists with budget development and monitoring.
Operates specialized computer software packages, including RecWare.
Purchases equipment and supplies to support programs.
In the absence of the recreation supervisor, may assume responsibility for the day to day operation of the program area.
Works collaboratively with staff, assuming program responsibilities as needed.
Regular attendance is required.
Must be available to work flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
Must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various events, meetings, and other relevant appointments. Must be able to drive a vehicle at all times of the day or night.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
Performs minor maintenance, such as litter pickup and cleaning restrooms;
Performs minor maintenance and reports maintenance needs to the proper staff and performs maintenance checks as needed.
Assists with transportation of participants and equipment.
Supervises staff working in summer camps, after school programs and volunteers.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university of recognized standing with major work in recreation or a related field. Must have substantial experience in organizing and supervising recreational programs in a community environment.
Preferred Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP).
Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
CPR and General First Aid certifications are required.
Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.
May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.

The Jackson Heights Art Studio is one of Lynchburg's hidden gems, specializing in pottery and stained glass! This unique neighborhood art studio features 10 potter’s wheels, a slab roller table, an extruder, and a variety of clay and glazes for creating hand-built and wheel projects. Stained Glass artists are provided with grinders, lightboxes, an array of textured and colored glass sheets, solder, and tools to make colorful window hangings. Our seasoned instructors practice hand over hand instruction, and diligently work to cultivate a space of creativity and growth. All experience levels are welcome.
