The Assistant Director for Athletics for Compliance and Student Athlete Development will work with colleagues within the division to assure that the Athletics department is in compliance with all governing body rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; this includes, but is not limited to, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Little East Conference (LEC), New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). The Assistant Director for Athletics for Compliance and Student Athlete Development will provide compliance and rules education to all appropriate parties within the campus community. The position is responsible for the NCAA Compliance of all varsity sports, staff, and coaches.
The Assistant Director for Athletics for Compliance and Student Athlete will be responsible for the management and facilitation of student-athlete development programming which focuses on student-athlete leadership, personal development, professional development, and career readiness. The successful candidate will also assist the Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence with student-athlete community outreach initiatives and support the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) activities. This position is also responsible for the management of campus and community relationships specific to volunteer opportunities for student-athletes. Other job responsibilities will include participation and execution of various trainings to strengthen engagement in key areas such as career readiness and life skill development. There will be an emphasis on the design of a leadership development program in collaboration with the Deputy AD for Internal Administration and Operations/SWA and coaches.
Examples of Duties:
Compliance
Oversee National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) compliance for 19 varsity sports teams, student athletes, coaches, athletics staff, and all appropriate University personnel.
Ensure that the University's athletic programs comply with NCAA rules governing recruiting, amateurism, NIL (Name Image and Likeness), awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons, and sports camps and clinics.
Develop and conduct NCAA rules education sessions for coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and athletics boosters to encourage broad-based knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Submit waivers (e.g., medical, legislative) and secondary violations to LEC, NEHC and NCAA. Oversee and certify student-athletes eligibility, assist with monitoring satisfactory academic progress of student-athletes pursuant to the institution and the NCAA rules and regulations, and seasons/semester used.
Interpret NCAA rules and conduct investigations of all major and secondary violations and prepare all NCAA waivers and appeals.
Manage the certification of designated student-athletes by providing the documentation and monitoring required for compliance and academic eligibility related activities.
Organize and maintain NCAA compliance system; oversee Academic Performance Rate (APR), Graduation Rates, Sports Sponsorship, retention rates and all other NCAA and LEC/NEHC reporting.
With direction from Deputy Title IX Coordinator, provide support for yearly educational programming efforts related to the prevention of sexual harassment and assault to both meet NCAA attestation requirements and to build understanding and awareness of these issues and prevention methods.
Provide compliance documentation and support for Title IX/gender equity needs as requested by the Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation and the Deputy AD for Internal Administration and Operations/SWA.
Serve as a liaison, for compliance purposes, between the Athletic Department and university departments such as Undergraduate Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid and University Advising Center.
Responsible for preparing compliance reports as needed.
Student-Athlete Development
Create and administer a comprehensive 4-year program for student-athlete holistic development including academic success/advising, career planning & education, leadership development, financial literacy, etc.
Coordinate new student-athlete (first years/transfers) programs such as first year student athlete orientation.
Coordinate special events to celebrate and recognize UMass Boston student-athletes. This includes but is not limited to events (e.g., DIII Week Student Athlete Breakfast, Welcome Back BBQ, UMBY’s Sports Awards, etc.), speaker series, and forums.
Collaborate with the Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence and campus partners on matters that impact the all-inclusive student experience and its intersection with varsity athletic participation.
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Serve as the primary liaison to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), providing administrative oversight to the group, leading dialogues, scheduling external speakers and practitioners, and assisting with the production of student-led initiatives and events;
Coordinate annual SAAC leadership retreat.
Other
Serve on various committees both on and off campus;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, and a minimum of three-five years of full-time or part-time equivalent work experience at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III institution, conference office or NCAA national office required. Experience working with NCAA Compliance Assistant, Legislative Services Database (LSDBI), Academic Progress Rate database (APR) and ARMS software preferred.
Knowledge and proficiency of various administrative software applications and programs, including Microsoft Office.
Thorough understanding of special demands of the athletic environment with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff, boosters, University administration, faculty and surrounding community.
Ability to direct, prioritize, and perform detailed work with accuracy under time constraints.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information with discretion.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Strong commitment to student and customer service.
