The position is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals to gain experience in the field of athletic academic advising. Assistant Academic Advisors will create a supportive, positive atmosphere for student-athletes while monitoring their academic progress, identifying academic strengths and areas for improvement, and crafting a personalized holistic plan for collegiate success. In collaboration with advisors, learning specialists and other academic staff members, this position will help develop student-athlete autonomy and self-efficacy. This is an eleven-month commitment. The assistant advisor position will report to the Coordinator for the Assistant Academic Advisor Program.
Job Responsibilities
Academic Mentoring (50%)
• Assist student-athletes with the transition to college-level work
• Work one-on-one with student-athletes within a structured program for academic support
•Facilitate student-athlete understanding and independence in time management, note taking, and written and oral communication skills
•In accordance AASO policy, ensure that student-athletes who have disclosed their learning differences are utilizing accommodations
•Convey and model best practices for approaching and communicating with university faculty
•Connect student-athletes with campus and athletic resources •Arrange academic support for assigned caseload
Academic Advisement (20%)
•Advise student-athletes about academic requirements and selection of courses
•Review and interpret standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites
•Assist with new student orientations for first-time college students and transfer students
•Review and interpret placement and other standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites
Administrative Advising Duties (20%)
•Prepare semester summaries, advisement summaries, weekly academic reports, student records, degree audits, individual education plans, presentation materials, registration forms and drop/add forms
•Provide guidance on relevant institutional policies and procedures
•Understand the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information
•Maintain up-to-date knowledge of degree program requirements
Other Responsibilities (10%)
•Attend staff and unit meetings
•Conduct occasional class attendance checks
•Communicate with supervisor regarding assigned programmatic tasks and report progress in meetings as appropriate
•Learn and adhere to NCAA, Big 12, and Texas Christian University rules and regulations
•Other duties as assigned by the academic advisors

Master’s degree in Education or Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or related field
