The ISU Athletics Department is accepting applications for a Turf and Field Management Specialist I. This position will assist the team in combining science and training to maintain optimum playing surfaces, surrounding turf areas, and the common grounds for the Athletics Department. This position will initially service the Cyclone Sports Complex (CSC which is home to Soccer, Softball, Cross Country Course and Track and Field), but field assignments are subject to change.
Assists in analysis, planning, execution and maintenance of natural and synthetic field surfaces and set-up for competitions.
Helps determine proper species and cultivars of grass, mowing height, timing of top dressing and aeration, fertilization and weed management, and irrigation needs.
Assesses turf quality and performs regular maintenance and seasonal upkeep.
Prepares fields/grounds for competitions by laying out and painting field stripes, logos, markings, signage, etc. according to regulations for each sport.
Maintains surrounding grounds via landscaping, mowing, snow removal, etc.
Supervises the access and use of the areas while maintaining optimum playing conditions.
Assists in coordinating grounds and equipment maintenance schedules, developing procedures, and recommending products.
Regularly assesses weather conditions, renders advice or opinions, handles conversion and protection of athletic fields during special events.
Builds and manages internal and external business relationships.

The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of turf management principles including experience with a variety of sports and playing surfaces; an understanding of governing requirements for field layouts and markings; the ability to problem solve and communicate effectively with others. Requires the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions; regular walking, pushing, bending and pulling; and the ability work non-traditional hours based on weather conditions and to work at assigned events.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with maintenance on baseball or softball infield skin as well as clay areas (i.e. batters boxes, bullpens, mounds/circles). Experience laying out and painting field stripes/logos/markings associated with soccer and/or softball/baseball with knowledge of those regulations. Experience with cool season sand based and native soil fields, and synthetic turf surfaces. Degree in related field (horticulture, turf management, agronomy, etc.). Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator license. Valid driver’s license.
