The Director of Development is a member of the Gopher Athletics development team with the responsibility to secure major gifts ($50,000 and above) in support of the department's top priorities. This position will actively manage a portfolio of approximately 125 major gift donors and prospects while working in coordination with other members of the development team and with the University of Minnesota Foundation. A focus of this position is to assist in the department's efforts to identify and cultivate new donors to Gopher Athletics. This is a hybrid work environment opportunity.
Major Gift Development - 80%
Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors with a specific focus on major gift prospects. Assist fundraising initiatives to define and articulate priorities, identify prospective donors, strategically engage and cultivate prospects and steward past donors. Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the philanthropic priorities to effectively present to prospects and donors. Build and maintain a portfolio of approximately 125 major gift prospects to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation, closure, and stewardship. Performance expectations for this level of gift officer include approximately 15 solicitations per year at $50,000 or more. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Utilize various giving methods such as cash, planned giving and non-cash gifts. Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range are $1 million-plus. Works closely with prospect management and development leaders to set appropriate annual goals. Coordinate prospective donors through appropriate procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor's satisfaction with the institution. Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and other Foundation staff on donor strategies.
Complete, file and maintain accurate, relevant and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing a database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals. Attend University and external major gift cultivation events. Have a significant presence at athletics events throughout the year. Assist with budget management as needed. Prepare reports and other required information as requested. Assist development leadership with major donor/campaign strategies and special projects as requested.
Work with assigned sport programs on fundraising strategies and communication - 10%
Maintain communication with coaching and support staff. Coordinate donor communication. Provide guidance on sport-specific fundraising initiatives.
Salary range for this position is $79,000 - $82,000
Bachelor's degree and 3 or more years of demonstrated ability to successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivations and solicitation of individuals/businesses.
