Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services, the Learning Specialist/Academic Counselor (LS/AC) will deliver comprehensive academic services to Men’s Basketball and Football student-athletes by facilitating educational, personal, and career development services. The position will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop individualized academic plans, coordinate study table, mentoring and tutorial services. This position will travel with athletic teams as needed.

As an Academic Counselor, this position will be the academic counselor for Men’s Basketball and a Football position group and will monitor student-athlete academic progress by meeting with student-athletes, communicating with faculty, and reviewing academic progress and tutorial reports. The position will develop graduation and student-athlete success plans by collaborating with campus advisors and other campus partners.

As a Learning Specialist, this position will provide direct support to student-athletes with learning disabilities and other academic challenges. It will develop individualized academic plans to provide compensatory strategies and support student-athletes towards becoming independent learners. Also included in responsibilities will be to assist with educational assessments, evaluations, and testing referrals while interpreting diagnostic reports and collaborating with the Connors Family Learning Center.

Bachelor’s degree required Education, Counseling, Sports Management, English or related field

Master's degree preferred; Counseling, Education, Higher Education Administration, Sports Administration, or related field

1 – 2 years of experience required & 3 – 4 years preferred; Teaching, higher education, academic advising, counseling, academic support services or related field;

Demonstrated ability to work with academically challenged students and students with learning disabilities; Strong interpersonal skills; Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to various audiences; Strong computer skills; Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and GradesFirst/Navigate; Knowledge of NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rules and requirements; Ability to work evenings, weekends and travel as needed with athletic team; Must be able to demonstrate professionalism and effectively interact with a diverse population of students, coaches, and university administrators.
