This position requires the ability to have a vision, lead, supervise and manage a comprehensive sports medicine program at the division one level. The Associate AD for Student-Athlete Health and Performance must have the ability to make independent decisions in the following areas; injury assessment, injury referrals, injury care management, return to play, emergency care, student-athlete health and wellness, communication, department advancement, staff management and administration under the supervision of the head team physician and deputy director of athletics. This position requires the ability to work with strength & conditioning staff, sports coaches, athletic administration, Harvard University Health Services staff, student-athletes, and team physicians. The Associate AD must possess the skills necessary to multi-task, communicate effectively with student-athletes and other parties mentioned above, complete tasks on time, and plan effective strategies to manage and develop the sports medicine department and student-athlete health and wellness. This position is a 12-month position and requires managerial and supervisory responsibilities.
Position Description:
MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT TO INTERCOLLEGIATE VARSITY ATHLETES:
- Coordinates medical care of intercollegiate student-athletes consistent with the Harvard University Athletic Training Guidelines. Care includes the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses.
- Create a vision and develop programs to consistently advance sports medicine services and promote student-athlete health and wellness within the philosophy and resources of Harvard University.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with athletic administration, coaches, HUHS staff, student-athletes, and other campus professionals in the development and advancement of sports medicine services and student-athlete health and wellness.
- Ability to make appropriate decisions in areas of therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, manual therapy treatments and return to play.
- Supports assigned varsity teams; handle walk-in care; supports special events as assigned.
- Implements measures to prevent injuries and prepare athletes for practice and competition, including taping, bracing, therapeutic exercise, movement screens, and wearable technology.
- Refers student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and to implements physicians’ instructions regarding management of athletic injuries.
- Communicates professionally and effectively across a large, diverse population including, but not limited to, all student-athletes, fellow staff, athletic training students, physicians, coaches, and other sports medicine umbrella practitioners.
- Must be able to make appropriate decisions regarding the sports medicine emergency action plans and carry out plans for each athletic venue.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervisor to sports medicine staff which includes but is not limited to athletic trainers, x-ray technician, nutritionist, chiropractor, orthosis, and mental health counselors.
- Work directly with team physicians in developing sports medicine services for student-athletes and direction of the department.
- Serve as a senior member of the athletic administration team-complete tasks as assigned by Director of Athletics or his/her designee.
- Prepares and maintains medical records, including but not limited to the documentation of injury reports, medical treatments, rehabilitation programs, medical referrals, and other medical records.
- Alumni relations: may be asked to partner with senior athletic administration and/or the development office to assist in fundraising in areas of, but not limited to, sports medicine and strength and conditioning.
- Preceptor for undergraduate and graduate athletic training students.
COMPLIANCE:
- Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of Harvard University, Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) and athletic department.
- Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the Ivy League, National Collegiate Athletic Association and National Athletic Trainer’s Association.
- Completes and complies with HUHS training requirements including HIPAA Privacy and Security.
- Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Office.
- Maintains NATABOC certification; Massachusetts State licensure; and CPR/First Aid certification.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, in Athletic Training as well as Master’s Degree in a related field
- Current NATABOC (National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification) is required.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Eligible for athletic training licensure in the state of Massachusetts.
- Maintain certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
- Continue to meet NATABOC and state licensure requirements during their employment.
- Meet standards as required by Harvard University Health Services credentialing process.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Frequent travel is also required.
- Valid drivers’ license and ability to drive a vehicle is required.
- Able to lift and move medical equipment and supplies weighing up to 75-100 pounds.
- Possess strong inter-personal skills, ability to possess a vision to progress a sports medicine department and student-athlete health and wellness, ability to organize, plan and communicate such a vision, work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and other university constituencies.
- Ability to make independent decisions under the supervision of our physicians and senior athletic administration.
- Preferred - Candidates with experience in therapeutic exercise and manual therapy-based skills.
Certificates and Licenses:
- NATABOC (National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification)
- Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid
