The City of Yuma is seeking an energetic and experienced leader to serve as the next Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation in a dynamic, financially stable organization. This highly responsible administrative position assists the Parks and Recreation Director in the planning, supervision, management and direction of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. The Assistant Director oversees certain divisional operations and provides leadership to various full time, part time and seasonal personnel. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Parks and Recreation and has several manager level direct reports.

Under limited supervision, administers and directs the City of Yuma's Parks & Recreation (P&R) operations and programs; provides advice and counsel to Director, and supervises division managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists in directing Parks & Recreation (P&R) department operations; exercises independent judgment within broad policy guidelines; evaluates and analyzes issues, and recommends and implements solutions; provides leadership, direction and guidance in P&R program management.
- Provides advice and counsel to Director; assists with planning, directing, reviewing and evaluating P&R programs, and work performed; verifies compliance with all regulations, standards and policies.
- Supervises division and program managers, including parks, playgrounds, golf course, athletic fields and facilities, recreation centers and programs, aquatic facilities, Convention Center, Art Center, and Historic Theatre; assures all P&R facilities are attractive, safe, and provide a variety of leisure and recreation opportunities to enrich the quality of life for community residents and guests.
- Manages, coaches and trains staff, and evaluates performance; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, resource allocation, budgets, technical issues, quality standards, and services.
- Develops and manages implementation of the P&R capital improvement program.
- Works with managers to create a positive working environment, to challenge and motivate the P&R staff, to encourage new ideas and collaborative approaches to solving problems, and serve the public.
- Evaluates progress toward achieving P&R goals and objectives; evaluates staffing levels, resource availability and service demands, and recommends resource allocations to optimize budgeted funds.
- Reviews, approves and develops reports, technical documents and public communications.
- Analyzes operational information, evaluates trends, and develops plans to meet future needs; assures P&R issues are properly addressed and resolved; monitors changes in regulations and legislation.
- Manages usage of P&R facilities, and addresses and resolves customer service and contract issues.
- Represents P&R to state and regional agencies; explains and interprets programs, policies, and activities; promotes P&R programs and services to community agencies, citizen groups and the general public.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor's Degree in Parks & Recreation, Business or Public Administration, or related field; AND five years of public sector Parks & Recreation program management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid driver's License is required. An Arizona Driver's License will be required, if hired. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Parks and Recreation Executive (CPRE) designation is preferred.
