The Western Athletic Conference is accepting applications for the position of Associate Commissioner, Basketball. The WAC is an NCAA Division I conference located in the southern metro Denver area. The member institutions are Abilene Christian University, California Baptist University, Chicago State University, Dixie State University, Grand Canyon University, Lamar University, New Mexico State University, Sam Houston State University, Seattle University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Tarleton State University, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Utah Valley University. Southern Utah University and the University of the Incarnate Word will join the WAC in 2022-23. The WAC crowns team and individual champions in 20 sports – 10 men’s and 10 women’s.
Primary administrator to the men’s and women’s basketball programs and tasked with the overall management and administration of both sports.
Cultivate relationships between the Conference office, athletic administrators and coaches, and provide direct and clear communication.
Facilitate the league’s governance process as it relates to basketball policies, operations and scheduling.
Maintain relationships with external constituents, partners and NCAA Committee representatives in order to develop strategies that will enhance the prestige and competitive positioning of the league.
Directly oversee and implement scheduling strategies that will optimize postseason opportunities and put basketball programs in positions of success through aggressive non-conference and calculated intra-conference scheduling.
In conjunction with the league’s broadcast partners, direct the television scheduling process and procedures, and provide leadership to enhance branding efforts through all visual mediums.
Main point of contact to the Basketball game managers and interprets game operation policies and procedures for the membership.
Supervise the Coordinators of Basketball Officiating regarding all aspects of the programs while serving as the Conference representative to appropriate officiating groups/committees and educating the membership regarding new rules and points of emphasis.
Serve on the Conference’s Basketball Championship leadership team and help facilitate necessary processes for determining location, venues, and tournament formats.
Attend preseason practice, regular season, and postseason games as warranted.
Collaborate with the WAC Digital Network to create engaging basketball content with the objective to enhance viewership and awareness surrounding WAC Basketball.
Assist the Commissioner and Sr. Associate Commissioner, Internal Operations in developing and planning meeting agendas and materials for regularly scheduled meetings.
The position performs other duties as assigned by the Commissioner and/or Sr. Associate Commissioner, Internal Operations.
Desired Qualifications include:
Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 6-8 years of comparable experience in basketball and/or sport administration.
Strong working knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, intercollegiate athletics. Additional experience as a basketball student-athlete and/or coach is preferred.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting to efficiently meet established goals and deadlines.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a detailed manner.
Willingness to work in a team environment.
