The NCAA is requesting applications from interested individuals to serve as the NCAA Softball National Coordinator of Umpires. The position is the NCAA’s commitment to improving the overall quality and consistency of officiating throughout softball. The position will help promote better communication between officials, coaches and the NCAA, and help provide consistency in the interpretation of NCAA softball officiating mechanics. Additionally, the national coordinator will assist the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Softball Committees in the identification, training, selection and evaluation of officials for each of the NCAA softball championships. This position is a one-year term, renewable each year. The official term will begin as close as possible to Sept. 1, 2021. A stipend is paid during the official term.
Reports to: NCAA Divisions I, II and III Softball Committees and NCAA softball championships staff liaisons.

Expectations of Position:
a. Positively represent the interests of the NCAA and its softball umpire program by fostering a culture of excellence and cooperation among all softball constituencies.
b. Assist the softball championships staff liaisons in continuing to improve the national umpiring program, national educational platforms and the regional advisors program.
c. Serve in an advisory role to the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Softball Committees with the selection, assignment and advancement of umpires during the respective Softball Championships, as well as other championship umpiring matters. The advisory role is to be informed by regular consultation with the regional advisors (2).
d. Work regularly with Divisions I, II and III conference coordinators of umpires to assure the most consistent and effective teaching and communication is being utilized in educating and developing umpires.
e. Work collaboratively with the NCAA Softball Secretary-Rules Editor (SRE) to ensure good communication as rules, interpretations and mechanics of the game are reviewed.
Duties, Requirements and Responsibilities:
a. Create content, coordinate and conduct Softball Umpiring Program (SUP) umpiring clinics (in person or via video) for all umpires in conjunction with the NCAA Softball SRE, serving as the primary clinician for these sessions (annually).
b. Assist the softball championships staff liaisons in producing and editing instructional videos, to be used by umpires/coordinators and coaches, outlining new rules, points of emphasis, mechanics (umpires/coordinators only) and any other information deemed necessary and appropriate.
c. Conduct presentations with the NCAA Softball SRE to the Divisions I, II and III conference coordinators of umpires, outlining the new rules, points of emphasis, mechanics and other umpiring matters as part of the annual coordinators of umpires meeting.
d. Work in collaboration with the NCAA Softball SRE to develop the annual eligibility exam and in-season quizzes for posting on the NCAA ArbiterSports SUP website.
e. Evaluate performance of umpires during the regular-season via television or DVDs.
f. Conduct in-person evaluations and schedule travel during the regular-season to successfully engage in dialogue with the members of the softball community. g. Develop educational and video content for posting on the NCAA ArbiterSports SUP website throughout the year with approval from softball championships staff liaisons.
h. Oversee the regional advisory program, which includes conducting regularly scheduled conference calls, communication through the NCAA ArbiterSports SUP website and in-person meetings with the group.
i. Serve as primary mechanics liaison and assist in the annual editing of the CCA Softball Umpires Manual.
j. Conduct joint teleconferences with the NCAA Softball SRE and selected media partners to outline rules changes, points of emphasis and other umpiring matters as requested and approved by the softball championships staff liaisons.
k. Conduct in-season teleconferences with the conference coordinators of umpires and NCAA staff, inclusive of the NCAA Softball SRE and NCAA Playing Rules Administrator assigned to softball.
l. Participate in teleconferences and in-person meetings as an ex-officio member of the NCAA Softball Rules Committee.
m. Conduct teleconferences with umpires selected to work the NCAA championship in conjunction with Division I, II or III softball staff and Division I, II or III Softball Committees.
n. Conduct presentations for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association membership on various umpiring matters as requested and approved by the softball championships staff liaisons.
o. Attend in-person meetings throughout the year (e.g., Division I, II or III Softball Committee meetings, Softball Rules Committee meeting as requested).
p. Develop mechanics questions for the annual rules survey to be submitted to the NCAA Playing Rules Administrator.
q. Shall not be an active NCAA coach, official, or conference coordinator/assignor.
r. Other duties as assigned by NCAA staff and/or the NCAA Softball Championship Committees.
Preferred Qualifications and Minimum Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree (essential).
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills (essential).
3. Ability to relate effectively with umpires and coaches on a national level (essential).
4. Extensive knowledge of NCAA softball rules and their relationship to officiating mechanics and techniques (essential).
5. Strong administrative and organizational skills (essential).
6. Ability to use email as a means of correspondence (essential).
7. Experience in officiating or coaching at the collegiate level (essential); and
8. Shall not be an active NCAA coach, official, or conference coordinator/assignor (essential).
