ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Delivers routine and complex preventative and remedial treatment to student-athletes in order to promote health, safety, and welfare; applies specific and appropriate taping, bracing, and other protective/supportive devices to student-athletes to prevent injury or re-injury.
Monitors environmental conditions and makes recommendations with regard to the safety of student-athlete participation; monitors and recommends proper safety conditions of all athletic team practices, conditioning programs, facilities, and equipment to coaches and administrators.
Adheres to established policy to document and maintain records of injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to participation for medical and legal purposes; maintains the security of medical records with regard to HIPAA guidelines.
Assists with the administration of the University drug and alcohol education and testing program; collects urine samples for testing purposes; counsels and refers athletes regarding alcohol/drug use and nutritional considerations to appropriate professionals.
Acts as a liaison between team physician, athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents regarding medical issues; makes referrals to team physicians/medical specialists or facilities.
Interacts with athletes and insurance companies to ensure the delivery of covered services under established policy.
Maintains required licensure and certification.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
Coordinates the concussion testing program.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with various aspects of team operations and functioning as requested; drives university vehicles on team travel trips.
Transports YSU student-athletes to medical facilities as necessary.
Travels with varsity teams as directed.
Performs any and all other related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operation of Youngstown State University.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision is exercised over student employees.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Athletics Director, Sports Medicine
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSURES: Ohio State License OT.PT.AT Board of Ohio; National Athletic Trainers Association Certification; Red Cross CPR; Red Cross AED; First Aid Certification; Automatic External Defibrillator Certification; valid driver’s license.
Minimum: At least a bachelor’s degree in exercise science or a related field and at least two years of athletic training or sports medicine experience at the collegiate or professional level within the past five years; evening and weekend hours and travel required; valid driver’s license.
Preferred: A master’s degree. Collegiate or professional experience with lacrosse, soccer, football, volleyball, hockey, or field hockey.
