POSITION SUMMARY: Under the medical supervision of the Tulane Athletics Health Care Administrator and reporting to the Deputy Director of Athletics, Student Services, the successful candidate will lead the Athletics Department in implementing a successful sport performance program for the student-athletes. The Associate Athletics Director for Sport Performance oversees the following areas: Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, and Behavioral Health.
This position is responsible for the overall operations, success and performance of the athletic training program. This position fosters effective collaboration and synergy in the sport performance areas. This position ensures the delivery of services intended to support physical, emotional, and social health of all student athletes. Ensures that all medical records and insurance claims are properly maintained and recorded. Supervises the coordination of all student athlete care with team physicians. Manages the athletic training budget and supervises the Athletic Department’s drug testing program. Assists in communicating the vision for the department and assists with strategic initiatives. Works on cross-department projects that are aligned with the University's mission and strategic priorities. Ensures compliance with all university, NCAA, state, federal and conference policies rules and regulations. This position may also serve as sport administrator for particular programs as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. ADMINISTRATIVE - Manages all aspects of the athletic training room operations and supervises the athletic training room staff. Manages athletic training operations at all games/events as necessary: Advise and consult with Tulane’s Director of Athletics and/or his designee, and Tulane’s Team Physicians; serve as a liaison to the Tulane Medical Center, the Tulane Institute of Sport Medicine, the Tulane Center for Sport, and the Tulane Student Health Center; serve as an athletic trainer to assigned sport programs; coordinates care, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries for student-athletes; autonomously manages return-to-play and return-to-learn injury and concussion protocols in conjunction with the Tulane Health Care Administrator; identify and implement strategies to improve the health, fitness, and well-being of student-athletes; identify and implement strategies to reduce any and all costs associated with the delivery of athletic training, physical therapy and other medical services to student-athletes; recommend the acquisition and maintenance of equipment and supplies to facilitate and enhance the delivery of athletic training and physical therapy services; ensure athletic training rooms are kept clean, organized, and meet safety standards; develops and administers policies and procedures to ensure compliance with athletics training, Department and University governing rules, regulations and risk management procedures and protocols to minimize the risk of liability; ensure that the Sports Medicine manual is updated/reviewed annually, and it is current with University, AAC, NCAA, and NATA standards; develop policies including Emergency Action Plans (for all facilities used); drug testing procedures; weather related illness measures; infectious disease practices; concussion protocols; and student-athlete insurance verification; and represent Tulane at all assigned American Athletic Conference meetings and medical advisory groups. (30%) 2. PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT AND ASSIGNMENTS - Recruiting, supervising, managing and developing staff that report directly to the Associate Athletics Director for Sport Performance: Recruit, hire and train all athletic trainers and graduate assistants for the Athletic Department; supervise and provide leadership to the Directors of sport performance units; ensure the effective collaboration, communication and coordination of sport performance units; develop assessment tools to evaluate the success of sport performance units; responsible for ensuring Department, University and Federal recruiting and hiring practices are followed as well as Tulane and Department policies for onboarding, staff evaluations, salary recommendations, and disciplinary action/dismissal of personnel, if necessary; oversees daily job performance of athletic trainers, graduate assistants and assigned student workers; schedules athletic training coverage for all home intercollegiate practices, contests, and games; responsible for the coordinating and balancing work schedules for all sports medicine staff members (including contracted ATC’s) as needed; and represents Tulane at all assigned American Athletic Conference meetings and events. (30%) 3. FINANCIAL - Manage the development and strategic implementation of the athletic training budget. Oversee the budgets of all sport performance units: Assists in the annual development of the budgets of sport performance areas; responsible for the management of the athletic training budget to include the ordering of appropriate athletic training equipment and supplies; included in the athletic training budget are funds for the necessary CEUs for full-time staff to remain current in licensures and professional development; assists in the oversight of medical billing and insurance coverage; ensures all sport performance units operate with fiscal responsibility; communicates budgetary concerns with supervisors in a timely fashion; manage purchasing of athletic training supplies and resources needed for student-athlete participation; and allocate resources for staff travel to professional development events. (25%) 4. RECORD KEEPING AND OTHER DUTIES - Ensure all medical, student, and personnel records are accurate, thorough, and adequately maintained in sport performance areas. Perform other duties as assigned: Medical reports are detailed, accurate and submitted in a timely manner; maintains personnel records for each supervisee; coordinate Department’s medical insurance billing and reimbursements working with Center for Sport and University offices to provide the best services for Department’s student-athletes; assist with the organization and coverage of sports camps as requested; and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or his/her designee. (10%) 5. NCAA Related: Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately. Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations. (5%)
Required Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Athletic Training, physical therapy or a related field
7 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics administration of which at least 3 years in supervisory or managerial responsibilities
Current CPR/First Aid/Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Certification
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

Available to work flexible work schedule including nights and weekends
Travel with sport teams for away contests as needed
Through knowledge of NCAA and American Conference rules and regulations
Certification as a Louisiana Athletic Trainer or the ability to obtain such within the first 6 months of employment
Experience at the NCAA Division I level
