Associate/Assistant Commissioner of Communications and External Relations

The Big Sky Conference, an NCAA Division I FCS conference located near Salt Lake City, Utah, is seeking a dynamic Associate/Assistant Commissioner of Communications and External Relations. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the conference’s storytelling and brand-building efforts, and will oversee the conference’s communications, digital and video, marketing, promotional, and sports information outreach.

The successful candidate will possess at least five years of full-time experience in sports communications, marketing, and/or journalism. This person must have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Candidates must have a demonstrated history of being creative, taking initiative, and collaborating with fellow staff members and institutional personnel. The candidate will support the Big Sky Conference, its member institutions, and their staff members to promote and enhance the league’s student-athletes and coaches through press releases, videos, photos, social media, and marketing and branding initiatives.

This position will report directly to the Deputy Commissioner and will supervise three full-time positions – two Directors of Communications plus a Director of Broadcast and Digital Media – as well as a part-time intern.

This position will serve as the primary communications contact for a number of assigned sports. With special attention to digital and social media, the successful candidate should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and a strong and eager communicator who aspires to be a great teammate and possesses the ability to manage and complete numerous assignments in a timely manner.

• Create, guide, and post content for the Conference across all platforms, including the official website and social media accounts
• Supervise a staff to work efficiently, collaboratively, and creatively
• Serve as the media relations liaison for the Big Sky Conference office and a selected number of sports (to be determined, as will assignments for the staff)
• Work collaboratively with Conference sports administrators and championship managers for assigned sports, and continually and consistently communicate information to enhance the perception of the Conference, its member institutions, student-athletes, and coaches
• Work with institutional communications contacts to brainstorm and produce innovative and engaging content for social media platforms, including GIFs, animations, short videos, and other social media-specific content
• Provide social media oversight for assigned sports; graphic design experience strongly preferred
• Manage the day-to-day aspects of assigned sports, including but not limited to statistics, weekly releases and awards; all-conference awards, record books, and updates to BigSkyConf.com and social media accounts
• Coordinate all communications responsibilities for Conference-wide programming as well as sponsorship fulfillment with Learfield IMG College
• Oversee in-game promotions and marketing plan for the Conference’s championships, including ticket sales for the men’s and women’s basketball championships in Boise
• Provide administrative support for in-person and virtual meetings related to the member schools’ communications directors, external relations, and coaches’ meetings
• Ability to travel to select events
• Ability to demonstrate creativity in both writing and visual content
• Ability to work individually as well as in both small- and large-group settings

Benefits

• The annual salary range will be low- to mid-$60k, and salary and title will be commiserate with experience of successful candidate
