Job Description Summary: Responsible for the administration and development of Men's and Women's Cross Country team. Selects, recruits and monitors student-athletes. Primary focus is on student athletes' academic success, teaching the sport of cross country and development as good citizens and representatives of the College. Follows rules and guidelines in accordance with the NJCAA. Develops preliminary budget, schedule, travel and equipment needs. In conjunction with the Executive Director of Campus Life, work to establish fundraising goals and promotional visibility of the College.
Required Qualifications: An associate’s degree and Extensive successful coaching experience at high school varsity level or higher required. Experience with budget oversight, student activities and a willingness to work with students in a service capacity. Valid Driver’s License CPR/AED Certification
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree College level running experience Knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations. Strong communication, motivational and organization skills. Team building abilities and working in a collaborative environment.
Other Information: The Head Coach, Cross Country position will be responsible for helping to build the Cross Country program at Southwestern Michigan College after a 24 year hiatus from college sports. As such, the first year of this position will differ from subsequent years. In the first year, the position will be paid $20 an hour as a non-exempt, part-time position. Beginning 7/1/2021 the job will change from preparation/set up of a program to primarily coaching. At that point the position will pay $4000+bonuses as an exempt, adjunct faculty classification. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. Observes players, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement. Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard. Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport. Assesses player’s skills and assigns events. Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development. Works with the Executive Director of Campus Life in scheduling facilities for practices and competition. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury. Follows NJCAA, and College regulations governing the athletic program. Maintains team statistics as required by the NJCAA. Develop cross country team schedule and coordinates team travel. Models SMC’s core values and maintains appropriate conduct towards players and officials. Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms. In collaboration with the Executive Director of Campus Life, coordinate athletic fundraising efforts, including athletic camps or other initiatives and events. Responsible for proper budget management and for prompt submissions of accurate expense information and receipts.
