ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE AND PITZER COLLEGE: Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding college of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Pomona College has a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, math and sciences, emphasizing critical thinking and high impact practices. Pitzer College, established in 1963, was founded as an innovative liberal arts institution, initially specializing in social and behavioral sciences, but has since expanded to other fields. Pitzer’s academic programs emphasize social justice, intercultural understanding and environmental sensitivity. The 21 varsity Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise of students from both colleges, and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III. The Colleges have a combined enrollment of 2,600 students.
POSITION SUMMARY: The successful candidate will report directly to the Sports Information Director and serve as a primary media contact for Pomona-Pitzer’s 21 varsity sports. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to assisting the Sports Information staff with coverage of Pomona-Pitzer’s 21 varsity sports; serving as the primary contact for assigned sports (assignments subject to change); producing online team record books, preparing pre-game information, game programs, game stories, news releases, statistics, generating feature stories, video highlights and other creative content for Sagehens.com; establishing and maintaining positive relations with media through strong interpersonal communication skills; staffing home and select away events; supervising student workers; and producing an array of informative and creative content appropriate for various social media platforms and their varied audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree earned in the in journalism, communications, sport management or a related field. Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to effectively write, edit and publish accurate and compelling stories; knowledge of AP style; proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Word and StatCrew statistical software; working knowledge of various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc). The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, effectively train and supervise student personnel, and establish and sustain strong collaborative partnerships with key constituencies (supervisor, coworkers, coaches, university administrators, the campus community, and the public). REQUIRED HOURS: Weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the Colleges or division. Must be willing to work extensive weekend and evening hours.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Starting pay rate: $4,401.17 per month.
