SUMMARY: The City of Berkeley is seeking applications from qualified candidates for an exciting opportunity as an Assistant Recreation Coordinator! This classification assists in planning, coordinating, and supervising a specialized city-wide recreation or sports program. Desirable candidates will have experiencein one or moreof the following areas:
Therapeutic Recreation- Planning, facilitating, and evaluating programs for people with disabilities in both inclusive and specialized settings.
Day Camp- General oversight of an outdoor-based summer day camp and after school program including marketing, participant registration, staff supervision, and program development.
Experience with Teen Programs- Developing meaningful and responsive city-wide programs for diverse groups of teens.
Youth Sports- Oversight of development and expansion of seasonal, city-wide youth sports programs including, but not limited to: baseball, basketball, and flag football.
Volunteers/Special Events- Recruit, train, and retain community volunteers to assist with a variety of division/department-wide programs and special events.
Environmental Education -Assist with facility management, staff and volunteer training and supervision, environmental education instruction, teacher training, curriculum and program development, and special event coordination.
The current vacancy oversees the operations of the Recreation Division's Therapeutic Recreation Program, which includes supervising participants of all ages and abilities in inclusive afterschool and summer day camp programs, managing specialized recreation programs, as well as offering resource and referral services for all Recreation Division programs and the community.Preferred qualifications for this role include certification as a Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS) or Recreation Therapist Certified(RTC) or eligible to sit for State or National Certification exam.

Typical duties include:
Assists in recreation program planning, organization and implementation
Recommends staffing, coordinates staff assignments and program scheduling and participates in the recruitment, interviewing, testing and training of new staff
Completes staff evaluations and organizes training and safety practice sessions
Writes staff training materials; monitors the progress and effectiveness of recreation and sports programs and recommends necessary improvements
Updates brochures and poster layouts, prepares mailing lists and arranges for publicity in local media
Sets up fund raising events and activities such as sports tournaments
Organizes and directs volunteers for specialized recreation programs
Provides volunteer training and organizes recognition events
Surveys program participants to develop program feedback
Monitors the collection and deposit of program receipts
Handles recreation and sports section payroll and prepares periodic program reports
Participates in the preparation of program budgets and quarterly reports
Monitors supply needs and requisitions necessary supplies, materials and equipment
Plans, organizes, schedules and staffs sports programs
Schedules and staffs athletic leagues and coordinates team schedules
Enforces safety and operating procedures; may develop training materials and conduct workshops and environmental education programs for the general public and school district
Education:Equivalent to graduation from high school Experience:Two (2) years of experience in recreation program planning, coordination or leadership. College level coursework in recreation, physical education or a closely related field may be substituted for the experience on a year for year basis.
