Provides a comprehensive support program for approximately 350 student-athletes at the College. This position will promote academic success, a positive athletic experience, and will develop a structure of support to athletes for their academic achievement and personal growth through a variety of strategies, programs and interactions. This position will educate the student-athlete population regarding their individual responsibility to take ownership of their athletic, academic, and personal growth. The coordinator will maintain a culture of improving the student athlete experience by working with coaches, academic departments, and student services departments to secure resources.
Demonstrate an understanding of the unique issues associated with being a student-athlete at an institution of higher learning.
Support student-athletes with strategies to successfully meet academic, social and behavioral expectations off the playing field through frequent scheduled meetings.
Collaborate with the head coaches and the athletic staff to foster a positive learning environment that allows the student-athletes to succeed in their coursework.
Provide support for the student-athlete onboarding process through collaboration with Admissions and Outreach, the Student Success Center, Counseling, Advising and Transfer Series, the Office of Student Financial Assistance, Student Registration Services and the Office of Student Records.
Collaborate with the Academic Athletic Eligibility Coordinator and the Office of Student Records to monitor student-athlete academic performance, and ensure satisfactory progress towards a degree, or a structured plan to transfer to a four-year institution.
Collaborate with the Learning Commons staff to arrange tutoring hours for the student-athletes and oversee the utilization of the computer lab, including hours of operation, tutoring services, and student worker supervision.
Develop a system to proactively communicate student-athlete class absences due to required team travel to away contests including creating, distributing, and collecting travel letters to the faculty at the beginning of the each sport playing season.
Develop and coordinate workshops on test-taking, study skills, time management, and other topics to assist student-athletes in adjusting to the demands of higher education.
Compile data on student-athlete academic performance including; individual student-athlete grade point averages, team grade point average, matriculation records, graduation data. Gather recommendations and potential nominations for NJCAA, Region 4, NATYCAA and N4C Academic Awards.
Work collaboratively with the Sports Information Coordinator on maintaining relevant and up to date FERPA compliant content about the academic successes of the student-athletes, and the policies and procedures of the student-athlete success program.
Develop, promote and facilitate the creating of a College of DuPage Student-Athlete Leadership Team to help develop leadership skills, plan/implement community service opportunities, and provide athletic leadership with feedback.
EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years working as an academic counselor or advisor at an institution of higher learning.
EDUCATION: Bachelors in one of the following; Counseling, Leadership, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Sports Management or other closely related degree.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) or more years advising and mentoring student-athletes at an institution of higher learning.
EDUCATION: Masters in one of the following; Counseling, Leadership, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education.
Extensive use of desktop computer and phone. Use of computer software programs including; Microsoft Office Suite, Presto Sports, and various other college database systems. Copy machines, printers and other general office equipment.
The majority of the time will be in an 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM capacity in an office environment. Employee may be required to work at various times of day and night to accommodate the diverse schedules of the student-athletes.
