Position Summary (Classified as Student Services Professional III) Full time position available on or after October 31, 2019 for the Athletics Department
Under the leadership of the Assistant Director of Athletics, the Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes provides academic, financial, and life skills advising to student-athletes. This position will coordinate, plan, implement and supervise athletic tutorial and study hall programs as well as determine and monitor student-athlete academic eligibility. The Athletic Advisor will communicate and solve problems with coaches, faculty and student-athletes concerning the academic development of all student-athletes.
Job Duties Duties include but are not limited to: • Oversee eligibility of all student-athletes to include: initial eligibility; transfer students and continuing eligibility and proper progression toward degree. • Act as liaison to resolve conflicts with coaches, student-athletes, and other Athletic Department personnel regarding the academic achievement of all student-athletes. • Work with Enrollment Services to determine NCAA eligibility for continuing students and transfer students. Computes electives, satisfactory progress towards degree and monitor student-athlete eligibility. • Work with coaching staff to monitor academic progress of their student-athletes. • Provide thorough knowledge of entrance requirements for freshman and transfer students and advise coaches as necessary. • Provide supervision/guidance and establish student-athlete tutoring program to ensure success of all student-athletes and those who are at-risk. • Work closely with at-risk student-athletes to assist them making progress towards their degree. • Supervises study hall which includes working some evenings. • Conducts grade checks for student-athletes and coordinates distribution to coaches. • Work with the Compliance Coordinator in conducting weekly 12 unit verification for student-athletes. • Compiles by semester team and individual grade point information for all student-athletes for eligibility and academic awards. • Compile by semester list of at risk student-athletes. • Attend team meeting with compliance officer and present information on format of study hall and eligibility information. • Act as a liaison in collaboration with other university departments, support programs, and faculty as well as the Academic Success Center. • Attend summer campus orientation programs. • Organize the annual "President's Breakfast" award ceremony. • Monitor the student-athlete academic advising program. • Serve as liaison between first year advising and the athletic department. Assist in registration procedures. Attend new student orientation, and advisory committee meetings. • Assist coaches in recruitment of prospective student-athletes. • Assist student-athletes in determining appropriate coursework in compliance with NCAA rules. • Provide academic advising to student-athletes; transfer evaluation review; course selection and registration assistance to new and continuing student-athletes. • Provide comprehensive advisement to assist student-athletes to identify their academic problems, evaluate them realistically, and deal with their aptitudes and abilities as related to their particular needs. • Meet with recruits to discuss NCAA eligibility rules and academic support programs. • Meet with all incoming student-athletes at New Student Orientation (NSO) to discuss academic requirements and assist in advising. • Provide academic, learning or career-related advising on an individual or small group basis to student-athletes. • Maintain current knowledge of courses, majors, prerequisites, general education and graduation requirements, university procedures, rules and regulations and other student services. • Review and analyze existing department policies/procedures and suggest appropriate modifications, as needed. • Utilize computer technology to maintain detailed and current records on each assigned student, including a program of study outline, general education evaluation, quarterly academic progress, advising contacts, referral, and test scores. • Monitor each student-athletes' academic progress and maintain regular contact. • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education:Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related. Experience:Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)
• Earned Master's degree or post-baccalaureate units. • Demonstrated direct experience advising higher education students. • Demonstrated experience working with NCAA eligibility. • Experience working with support services and special programs. • Previous experience developing and/or facilitating workshops/training. • Demonstrate specialized knowledge in NCAA eligibility rules and regulations. • Academic advising experience and experience working with NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.
• General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. • General knowledge of research and interview techniques • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations. • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews. • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data. • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly. • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas. • Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. • General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures, activities and practices of the program area to which assigned. • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques. • General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus. • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature. • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions. • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.

Salary Range $4,691 - $6,683 per month plus excellent paid benefits. (Anticipated salary will be $4,691 – $5,629 per month, depending on the qualifications of the successful finalist.)
