Position Summary The Athletic Director of Concordia University is responsible to provide leadership, vision, and advancement of the Athletic Department. Concordia’s athletic programs provide a critical face of the University – demonstrating through public competition the strength and values of our institution. The selected candidate will take on ‘servant leadership’ qualities to support and advance athletic programs at Concordia. This will be achieved through fundraising activities, advancement of the Concordia brand and presence within the community, providing support to coaches, staff, and athletes, and acting as a primary liaison between other components of the University and the Athletic Department.
This role provides dynamic, strategic and visionary leadership to support the Christian mission of the institution. This position requires a deep understanding of the transformative nature of the student-athletic experience, in order to support the coaches’ pursuit of sustained excellence both “on and off the field.” This position will focus on utilizing the Athletics Department to prepare students to be leaders who transform society, promote a culture of institutional compliance and academic integrity, and lead the Athletics Department’s Senior Support Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1.Vision and Planning
•Actively participate in university-wide strategic conversations to lever the athletic program to advance the university mission and strategic goals.
•Develop and clearly articulate the vision for the Athletics Department through dynamic and ethical leadership.
•Develop and lead long-range strategic planning initiatives that allow Concordia University to become increasingly competitive in recruiting and retaining top student-athletes.
•Create and implement methodologies for measurable athletic achievement across athletic programs.
•Provide leadership and develop a culture of trust, integrity, and vision within the Athletics Department.
2.Fundraising and Marketing •Convey the vision of the Athletics Department and the University to internal and external stakeholders in a detailed and compelling way.
•Lead, in cooperation with the Concordia University Foundation, the effort to fund and enhance athletic programs and facilities.
•Secure, in cooperation with the Concordia University Foundation, corporate sponsorships for Concordia University athletics.
•Build, in cooperation with Marketing, the Concordia University Athletics brand awareness in Portland and the region.
•Build, in cooperation with the Concordia University Foundation, a strong booster club and volunteer engagement, supporting fund-raising initiatives and other activities associated with Concordia University athletics.
•Manage direct marketing and promotional initiatives for the athletic department.
3.Compliance and Fiscal Oversight
•Manage fiscal oversight of the Athletics Department and related activities.
•Administer compliance with university, GNAC and NCAA eligibility and financial aid parameters and requirements.
•Support and advocate for the NCAA DII initiative of Community Engagement and the philosophy of ‘Life in the Balance’, including its six key attributes: Learning, Service, Passion, Sportsmanship, Resourcefulness and Balance.
•Comply with all university, Great Northwest Athletic, Conference, NCAA DII, federal, state and local reporting requirements.
•Ensure appropriate, responsible and accountable oversight for all game management.
4.Oversight of Staff and Coaches
•Direct and regularly assess the duties and performance of the Athletics Senior Support Team, coaching staff, athletic training staff, and sports information staff and conduct annual performance evaluations of the staff.
•Promote the growth and success of individual athletics programs through mentorship, advocacy, and routine collaboration.
•Adhere to all applicable university polices, as well as state and federal laws pertaining to employment of staff and students.
5.Ensure the highest ethical, moral and spiritual standards in all aspects of athletics at Concordia.
6.Advocate for the welfare and well-being of the athletics department coaches, athletes and related students and staff members.
7.Participate as a member of the President’s Strategic Cabinet.
8.Make periodic and special reports to the Board of Regents at the request of the President.
9.Perform other duties as assigned.
On a daily basis, this role interfaces with faculty, staff, student-athletes and prospective student-athletes as well as other university leaders and VPs, vendors, sponsors, donors, conference representatives and the public. Work contacts occur in person, by phone, email, etc.
Scope of Work
Span of control includes the entire athletics operation for the university. This role ensures an efficient workflow and works with university entities to ensure alignment with the university’s mission and values. This role creates a vision and strategy for Athletics fundraising and community engagement in support of the university vision and strategy. This role assists in the development of budgets and operational forecasts, monitors budget expenditures and ensures that budgets are followed appropriately, holds significant supervisory responsibility and implements decisions and actions that have a direct impact on the University as a whole and continuously looks for opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of procedures and processes.
Office and competitive indoor and outdoor athletic environment. Must be able to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings and work in a fast-paced professional environment. Might need to travel as needed to liaison with third party vendors and university partners. Minimum Physical Requirements
•Prolonged exposure to and use of computers, monitors and related peripherals.
•Tolerance to prolonged static positioning such as extended periods sitting/standing at a computer.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
•Bachelor’s degree required, Masters or Ph.D. preferred. •5+ years of progressively responsible experience with demonstrated success in athletics administration, particularly within the collegiate environment.
•5+ years of direct management experience.
•Possesses a thorough understanding of NCAA Division II rules and regulations.

This responsibility includes reading and studying available materials, attending professional conferences and meetings in order to remain advised on current regulations, trends and conduct of student-athletes.
•Collaborates effectively to build consensus from diverse opinions, yet is prepared to make decisions.
•Engages the larger university and surrounding communities effectively in helping build the vision of Concordia University athletics.
