Macalester College seeks to hire a Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. The Director is responsible for leading and directing all phases of a successful and competitive Track & Field and Cross Country program. The responsibilities of this position include leading practice and competition, recruiting for the program, providing administrative and staffing oversight, overseeing travel of the teams, and providing support for competitions held at Macalester College. The Head Coach represents and models the highest levels of honesty, integrity and sportsmanship to students, alumni, officials, and community members at all times.
Practice and Competition - Responsible for organizing, preparing, and conducting safe and strategic individual and team training sessions and competitive strategies. Executes appropriate coaching decisions during practice and competition and ensures the welfare of the student athletes representing their program. Represents the college and its athletics program with honesty, integrity and sportsmanship at all times, to various institutional programs and students, parents, the general public, alumni and external agencies. Develops a positive, professional relationship with officials, league personnel, and coaching colleagues.
Recruiting - Develops and incorporates a comprehensive recruiting plan that shows successful results for the recruitment, yield and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes in a rigorous academic environment. Serves as an effective recruiter for the program working within the parameters of Macalester, MIAC and NCAA rules. Recruitment strategy results in healthy roster numbers and a competitive program against scheduled opponents.
Game Management - Directs and/or assists with the preparation and event management needs at home competitive events. Assists in the coordination of special events including recruiting, alumni, the Mac Hac, and student-athlete recognition functions. Travel - Arranges and supervises transportation, lodging and meals in connection with off-campus competition. Ensures that the team represents the college at the highest level while off-campus.
Staffing - Hires, supervises and evaluates assistant coaches. Completes paperwork necessary for the hiring process in a timely fashion. Provides support and assistance in the development of Track and Field and Cross Country coaches.
Finance - Oversees, monitors, and balances the budget and all financial operations of the program. Develops an effective competitive schedule for the program within the budget parameters.
Engages in and promotes Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status or orientation.
3-5 years of college coaching experience in Track and Field or Cross Country.
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Physical Education, or related field from an accredited institution.
Certification in CPR/AED, First Aid.
Knowledge and appreciation of a liberal arts education and an understanding of the role athletics and recreation play in a college committed to academic excellence and cultural diversity.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, faculty, students, parents and alumni from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work within the framework of Macalester College policies, MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) regulations, and NCAA Division III philosophy and rules.
Maintains valid and annual certifications in: NCAA Rules test, CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood borne Pathogens safety and van driver certification(if applicable).
Proficiency in computer based technology, including excel and word.
Effective teaching methods; excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and willingness to work on projects with faculty, administrators, and staff.
