Job Purpose: The Scholastic Rugby manager will support the implementation of the strategies laid out in the USA Rugby Strategic Plan by leading the development of USA Rugby’s College & High School Development Plan, and then its implementation to drive growth and governance of college and HS rugby including growth, legitimacy, marketing and strategic planning.
Create a detailed strategy and operational plan for achieving USA Rugby’s Collegiate Women’s Rugby NCAA Initiative. (20%)
Partner with National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) to develop strategic and operational approach to NCAA sanctioning and support.
Work with greater women’s collegiate rugby community including the Women’s Collegiate Committee to outline Universities and conferences that should be targeted for adoption of Women’s Rugby as a varsity sport.
Coordinate regular communication efforts with targeted university rugby programs, Athletic Directors, athletic departments and various other stakeholders to facilitate the commitment to move to varsity status of their Women’s Rugby program.
Liaise with USOC, World Rugby, NIRA and NCAA for information exchange and strategy coordination.
Develop a detailed strategy and operational plan for the development of men’s and women’s collegiate rugby of all divisions; focused on legitimacy, marketing, and strengthening the collegiate clubs, teams and game. (40%)
Bring stakeholders together to develop a national, comprehensive collegiate development plan.
Partner with NAIA, NIRSA and others to strategically build relationship and grow the sport of rugby for men and women.
Work with USA Rugby’s collegiate committees including the Collegiate Management Council and sub committees to standardize and strengthen conference-based structure of university rugby.
Lead development of resources, best practices, development tools and other materials for the support and improvement of the college game.
Lead creation a best practices guidebook that supports the development of all collegiate rugby programs
Work with the marketing department to engage community members and contractors to expand the reach of development to more college programs and conferences.
Manage the US Olympic Committee’s Collegiate Development Program ‘Olympians Made Here’ campaign
Assist in facilitating strong collegiate alumni and work with the philanthropy department to identify opportunities for fundraising
Develop a detailed strategy and operational plan for achieving USA Rugby’s High School Varsity Initiative. (30%)
Work with the high school rugby community including the Youth & HS committee to outline keys to target the adoption of rugby as a club/varsity sport.
Communicate regularly with targeted high school athletic associations, Athletic Directors, Athletic Departments and various other stakeholders to facilitate the commitment to move to club/varsity status of their rugby program.
Liaise directly with the NFHS for information exchange and updating of strategies for achieving USA Rugby’s Varsity HS Rugby Initiative.
Assist with liaison support to high school stakeholders (NFHS, High School Athletic Associations, schools and coaches’ associations) and Olympic stakeholders (sport performance, NGBs) regarding the advancement and support of regulatory collaboration and/or reforms.
Manage partnerships with existing college and high school competition and development partner organizations (10%)
Maintain and strengthen partnerships with competition and development organizations.
Improve relations to partner organizations and increase their capacity to grow and manage competitions and programs.
Assist with projects, communications and relationship building with collegiate leadership organizations (Women Leaders, NACDA, coaching associations, etc.).
Seek out new and unique partnership opportunities for the development and improvement of the high school and college teams and administrative organizations.
Bring stakeholders of the college and high school rugby communities together for planning and implementation of programming
Develop and implement national plans for college and high school rugby
Raise the standards and legitimacy of the college and high school game
Make key partnerships for USA Rugby within the college and high school sporting organizations
Supervisory Responsibilities: Train and manage a supporting coordinator Intern supervision when needed Community and committee liaison and management Contractor management as needed
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Public speaking and presentation ability Excellent written and verbal communication skills Willingness to build and grow relationships throughout USA Rugby’s communities Ability to wear multiple professional hats Computer proficiency: Microsoft Office tools, Outstanding writing/editing skills Bachelor Degree or equivalent qualification Sports management/marketing experience in collegiate athletics Varsity and club sports experience Organization and multi-tasking skills Experience working with Varsity status initiatives in other sports a plus
Required Education & Experience: Bachelor Degree or equivalent 3+ years of experience in collegiate athletics or equivalent Willingness to travel and work weekends
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of the sport of rugby Experience with emerging sports and the NCAA Experience with High School Athletic Associations
