This role is responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering a comprehensive sports medicine/ athletic training program.
Supervises the rehabilitation protocol of injured student-athletes as prescribed by the team physician, providing prevention and treatment for athletic injuries including therapeutic rehabilitation to allow for return to competition, while prioritizing the welfare of student-athletes. Travels with and provides support to student-athletes. Assists with pre-season physical examinations and physical fitness screening. Provides supervision and guidance to athletic trainer assistant and/or student athletic trainers. Serves as a liaison between Director of Athletics, coaches, parents, doctors, student-athletes, strength trainer, departmental staff and the university to resolve problems and/or address concerns relative to the student athlete's injury. Maintain regular communication with Director of Athletics, coaches, team physicians, sports performance staff, and athletic administration in support of teams and individual student-athletes. Responsible for the development and management of the student athletic training program to include scheduling, recruiting, and equipment management/budgeting, and clinical/classroom instruction to student trainers. Responsible for treatment, rehabilitation, record-keeping, insurance coordination, and doctor referrals for all athletic injuries. Maintains medical files on assigned student-athletes including records of injuries, illnesses and treatment provided to student athletes. Responsible for issues concerning insurance. Performs administrative functions related providing health care for student athletes as needed. Assist to propagate a comprehensive public relations program. Assist with the operations of respective sport camps or clinics, and assurance of appropriate athletic training coverage. Responsible for certifying Department of Athletics’ coaches and staff in CPR. Ensure Department of Athletics, Texas A&M International University, NCAA and Lonestar Conference compliance. Serves as part of departmental leadership team. Assist with department fund-raising events. Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise Strength and Conditioning Head Coach. Coordinate and administer institutional drug testing according to policy, and facilitate NCAA year-round drug testing program. Responsible for maintaining current certification(s)/licensure(s) required as a condition of employment and providing valid and legitimate proof of certification(s)/licensure(s) to the supervisor prior to the expiration date(s) of certification(s)/licensure(s). Responsible for monitoring required staff certification(s)/licensure(s) including obtaining current, valid, and legitimate proof certification(s)/licensure(s), and providing such proof to the HR Office for the employees file. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
8 years of experience in athletic training, physical therapy, or related responsibilities. Additional relevant experience may replace education requirement (except AT certification/license requirement).
Master’s Degree in related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic computer skills including knowledge of computerized databases. Must possess strong interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with University community, outside community, and press.
Must possess a commitment to student learning and success, as well as a dedication to growth, development, innovation, and improvement.
Must possess sensitivity to a diverse background of students (academic, socio. economic, cultural/ethnic, physical/learning disabilities).
Must possess commitment and capabilities to abide by NCAA by. Laws and Heartland Conference regulations.
Ability to adhere to and support University & departmental policies and procedures
Knowledge of diverse and motivational teaching/learning strategies.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses Required:
Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and State Licensure required
Current First Aid/CPR Certification
Instructor certification in CPR/ First Aid
Position requires travel.
Position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekend and/or holidays.
