The Head Field Hockey Coach provides leadership and integrity through the provision of creating, planning, organizing, motivating, communicating and controlling aspects relative to recruiting, practices, competitions, student-athletes, assistant coaches and related booster clubs. The Head Field Hockey Coach uses current methodologies and recognized best practices in his or her field. The Head Field Hockey Coach must have the ability to coordinate a competitive program that develops the skills of his/her student-athletes in Field Hockey. He/she evaluates and recruits academically qualified student-athletes whose athletic skills would allow the program to be highly competitive.
The Head Field Hockey Coach is expected to conduct him or herself as a true leader and role model both on and off the field of competition. Moreover, the Head Field Hockey Coach is expected to be knowledgeable about and comply with NCAA regulatory policy governing his or her sport as well as NCAA and conference policies governing recruiting, eligibility, ethical standards, playing seasons, and extra benefits. Evidence of the Head Field Hockey Coach’s mastery of rules and policy will be in the Departmental expectation that the Head Field Hockey Coach successfully complete the annually administered NCAA Coaches Exam.
Duties and responsibilities of the Head Field Hockey Coach include, but are not limited to:
•The development and organization of team practices.
•The recruiting and hiring of assistant coaches, as prescribed.
•Attendance and participation at Departmental and Compliance Meetings as scheduled.
•Development and organization of team meetings and meetings with assistant coaches.
•Coordinates team travel logistics and itinerary with assistant coaches and Departmental personnel as necessary.
•Represents the University in compliance with NCAA policy in the recruitment of student-athletes.
•Represents the University in compliance with NCAA policy and consistent Departmental resources in the recommendation of athletic scholarships to prospective student-athletes.
•Coordinates with the appropriate sport administrator the following:
1.Recruitment and hiring of assistant coaches
2.Development and allocation of budget
3.Fundraising towards the achievement of program goals
4.Scheduling of opponents
5.Awarding of athletic scholarships
6.Matters pertaining to eligibility
7.Facility and equipment (also in collaboration with the appropriate equipment manager)
8.Recommendation of purchases of equipment
9.Athletic training for maintenance and rehabilitation (in collaboration with assigned training staff)
10.Strength and conditioning training (in collaboration with assigned strength staff)
Ability to organize and manage of all facets of the Field Hockey program, including but not limited to: recruiting, scouting, individual instruction, budget planning, monitoring the academic progress and success of student-athletes, and general day-to-day field hockey operations.
Knowledge of effective coaching techniques and best practices.
Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment.
Must be attentive to details.
Ability to lead and work independently as well as within a team environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrated knowledge of the NCAA rules and regulations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required;
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and athletic administration;
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Proficiency with the personal computer and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years related collegiate coaching experience. Demonstrated experience as a Field Hockey coach at the Division I collegiate level. Experience motivating and leading student-athletes toward competitive and academic success. Demonstrated experience recruiting student-athletes. Experience managing administrative tasks related to the operation of college level team sports. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Head coaching experience at Division 1 collegiate level.
