The purpose of this position is to instruct or coach groups or individuals in the fundamentals of softball.
Demonstrate techniques and methods of participation. May evaluate athletes' strengths and weaknesses as possible recruits or to improve the athletes' technique to prepare them for competition.
Responsible for orienting and training others, and assigning and reviewing their work. May also be responsible for acting in a “lead” or “senior” capacity over other positions performing essentially the same work, or related technical tasks and reporting to a higher level on a formal basis.
Nature And Scope
Internal contacts generally include administrators, faculty, students and staff. External contacts generally include vendors, consultants, visitors and the general public.
Essential Job Functions
Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
Provide training direction, encouragement, and motivation in order to prepare athletes for games, competitive events, and/or tours.
Identify and recruit potential athletes, arranging and offering incentives such as athletic scholarships.
Establishes commitments to rules compliance and keeps all student-athletes informed about NCAA, conference and University eligibility requirements, new legislation, academic standards and University code of conduct.
Plan strategies and choose team members for individual games or sports seasons.
Plan and direct physical conditioning programs that will enable athletes to achieve maximum performance.
Adjust coaching techniques, based on the strengths and weaknesses of athletes.
File scouting reports that detail player assessments, provide recommendations on athlete recruitment, and identify locations and individuals to be targeted for future recruitment efforts.
Keep records of athlete, team, and opposing team performance.
Instruct individuals or groups in sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles, such as specific ways of moving the body, hands, or feet, to achieve desired results.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of opposing teams to develop game strategies.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Knowledge of softball techniques and strategies.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse population. Must be detailed oriented and organized.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, residents, students and the general public.
Bachelor’s degree. At least three (3) years of coaching experience at the high school and/or collegiate level. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Proven ability to recruit student-athletes.
Physical Requirements • Average physical strength is required. • Must be able to ambulate, step, climb, stoop, bend twist and carry heavy objects over uneven terrain. • Must be able to demonstrate movements in which athletes are being trained. • Must be able to hear, see, talk, read and communicate with Howard University colleagues, athletes, prospective athletes, donors and other constituents orally and in writing. • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds of softball equipment regularly. • Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions.
