Culver Academies, an independent boarding school (grades 9-12) located on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee, Indiana, seeks to fill a Fellowship/Assistant Coach position in the sports of boys and girls tennis. The robust athletic program (excluding horsemanship) consists of 35 sports, 60 teams, 80% student body participation, approximately 100 coaches, and is governed by the IHSAA and other regulatory bodies. Programs range from developmental opportunities for beginners to prep sports for elite, college-bound student-athletes. Culver boasts of state, regional and national prominence in multiple sports, including tennis. Former collegiate student-athletes are exceptional candidates for this one-year fellowship.
Culver’s Gable Tennis Complex is the most comprehensive high school facility in the state of Indiana. Opened in 2007, the facility features 15 outdoor and five indoor courts. The five outdoor feature outdoor courts are lit and scoring is monitored by large electric Daktronics scoreboards. A central viewing platform offers visual to the entire complex. The outdoor and indoor complexes have each been awarded the USTA Outstanding Educational Tennis Facility in 2012 and 2014, respectively. The site is host to one of 64 IHSAA Sectionals, 16 Regionals, and one of only four sites for Semi-State competitions.
The Fellows Program at the Culver Academies was established in 1983 and currently offers a rich experience for recent college graduate student-athletes who want to explore various career opportunities at an independent boarding or day school (no certification required). While our program focuses mainly on those whose interests lie in teaching, we also offer fellowships in such areas as wellness, communications, technology, development, admissions and athletics. This program provides apprenticeships through which individuals gain the knowledge and experience necessary to pursue successful careers in secondary independent schools as well as valuable work experience for dynamic and highly motivated young adults pursuing opportunities outside of the educational field.
Culver fellows participate fully in the life of the Academies under the direction of mentor teachers, counselors, and coaches. These mentors help the fellows learn the basics of teaching and coaching methodologies, classroom management and group dynamics, as well as parent/student relationships. In addition to working in their chosen academic or professional field, fellows assist with extracurricular activities, working with an impressive array of student athletic teams. Fellows live in furnished dormitory apartments or in nearby campus housing and assume duties that allow them to become an integral part of the residential community.
The salary for the Culver fellowship is highly competitive with similar programs, but proudly offers several “extras” in the total compensation package. In addition to the furnished, rent free/utility free apartment, the Culver fellows enjoy free access to amenities such as cable TV, dry cleaning, meals through the Academies’ dining hall, state of the art Fitness Center and workout facilities, the Academies’ health clinic, a school issued laptop computer for the year, and many others. The one-year appointment also affords exceptional health insurance and retirement contributions to fellows as full time employees.
