Mississippi State University Athletics is seeking an Assistant Director/Communications to join its communications and external team. The successful candidate must be highly organized and driven with exceptional multi-tasking and communication skills. This position will work closely with the Associate Athletic Director/Communications, the department’s graduate assistants and student assistants in addition to working alongside the marketing and video teams. The candidate must have strong knowledge of social media platforms as well as outstanding writing and public relations skills. Travel will be required as well as working long hours and weekends.
1. Serve as the primary communications contact for the nationally-ranked baseball program.
a. Prepare, maintain and distribute media information and other publicity for baseball during the fall and spring seasons.
b. Manage, create and strategize creative content for the department’s social and digital media platforms related to baseball.
c. Produce content for the official athletic department website, particularly as it relates to baseball.
d. Serve as team spokesperson and coordinate all of the program’s media appearances.
e. Travel with the team to cover all games.
f. Supervise baseball press box for all home games.
g. Strategically communicate to manage the program’s national brand.
h. Provide coaches and staff with appropriate messaging for speeches and public appearances.
I. Work closely with the SEC’s broadcast partners, radio and external media to provide accurate information for coverage.
j. Maintain the baseball program’s statistical archives and records.
2. Serve as the editor of the football game program.
a. Oversee the content and production of the football game program.
b. Generate program ideas, delegate stories and meet appropriate deadlines.
c. Serve as liaison to the designer and printer.
3. Oversee graduate assistant who handles volleyball publicity.
a. Ensure that the graduate assistant is meeting appropriate deadlines and providing accurate information for volleyball coverage.
b. Serve as a mentor to the graduate assistant.
4. Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate local, state and national media representatives.
5. Complete other departmental tasks as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director/Communications.
Bachelor’s degree with focus of education in Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism
Two years experience with focus in media relations or athletic communications, preferably as a baseball contact
