James Madison University, a Division 1 member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association, is accepting applications for a Director of Athletics Facilities and Events. The mission of the Facilities and Events Department is to provide excellent customer service through the management of athletic facilities, event administration and operational support. Strategies for success include appropriate planning, development and implementation of effective facilities, games and event procedures. The goal of the Facilities and Events Department is to provide an environment that enriches the experience for student-athletes, participants and guests. Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director of Facilities and Events, the successful candidate will lead the Facilities and Operations and Event Management units while working cooperatively with internal departments, external contractors and services providers.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Provides leadership/oversight for full-time, wage and student staff through recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation.
Assists in resource management based on ongoing evaluation and assessment of departmental needs to best accomplish departmental mission.
Supervises vendors and contractors as assigned and ensures they are maintaining departmental standards.
Facilities and Events Administration:
Takes part in the strategic planning of annual goals and objectives for the Facilities and Events Department.
Serves as back-up to the Assistant Athletic Director by performing administrative duties such as contract approvals, key/access management, budgetary approvals, equipment transfer/disposals, etc.
Directs staff or coordinates resources in support of all events hosted in facilities including planning, resource allocation, budgeting and financial reporting.
Serves as Summer Camp Coordinator for Varsity Sport Programs.
Event/Game Management and Scheduling:
Serves as the Event/Game Manager for assigned events occurring in Athletic facilities.
Serves in secondary role as a Football Game Day Manager, leading planning and production meetings and assisting with bid submissions for football playoffs.
Manages all aspects of events such as planning and logistics to event implementation of staffing plans and collaboration with various units within Athletics, JMU and service providers.
Enforces health, fire, safety and other facility regulations, manages crowd control and ensures safety of game personnel such as teams, coaches and officials.
Coordinates and liaisons with on-campus departments and contractors to ensure appropriate support services for events.
Directs the scheduling of all athletic facilities.
Leads and/or assists with bid submission and planning and hosting of NCAA and CAA conference post-season events. Serves as Tournament Manager for assigned post-season events.
Facilities and Operations Management:
Manages daily operations of all facilities.
Facilitates events held in athletic facilities including providing and coordinating appropriate event support.
Manages inventory of all equipment and assets.
Manages maintenance and repairs of all equipment and facilities as assigned.
Serves as Building Coordinator for all athletic facilities which includes coordination with Facilities Management Planning and Construction regarding capital projects including procurement and operations and serves as a Liaison to Facilities Management for all renovation, refurbishment and maintenance of athletics facilities.
Required qualifications include:
Bachelor's degree in sports management, athletic administration or a related field.
Ability to work in an environment that has a high volume of events and often under stressful situations.
Ability to manage various projects at once, delegate duties when necessary and work autonomously or with a committee while demonstrating excellent judgment in decision-making.
Possess effective communication skills, both written and oral.
Possess strong organizational skills including strong attention to detail.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s degree in sports management, athletic administration or a related field.
3-5 years’ demonstrable experience in intercollegiate athletics event or facilities management.
Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience and ability to train and schedule staff to ensure maximum achievement.
Experience hosting NCAA and conference post-season events.
Division I football event experience is useful.
Experience in a collegiate institution, preferably Division I.
Skilled in resource management, allocation and prioritization.
