The Director of Athletics and Fitness oversees the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center as well as the Clipper Athletics Programs supported by an Associate Athletic Director and an Assistant Director. This position has the primary responsibility of the following:
Provide leadership for Athletics and the Fitness and Aquatics Center. Recruit, hire, and train senior staff as needed in the Fitness and Athletics Departments. Provide budget oversight for Athletics and Fitness and Aquatics Center. Maintain a safe environment for student-athletes through compliance with state, conference, and national governing body rules and regulations. Foster sportsmanship and unity within the department. Attend athletic conference meetings. Collaborate with campus administration and community members to develop and manage fundraising campaigns for the betterment of the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center and Athletic Programs. Coordinate with staff to offer a variety of programs to the student body and local community through the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center and the Athletic program. Coordinate with the Associate Athletics Director to provide an enjoyable, exciting, and family friendly game experience during home athletic contests. Oversee all aspects of game management (scoreboard, staff, crowd control, etc.) for home athletic contests when needed. Coordinate with the Assistant Directors on oversight of the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center including facilities, program development, scheduling, fundraising, fee generating events, and promotion of the Center. Oversee Reynolds Center, Murdock Fitness and Aquatic Center, and other athletic facilities in regard to athletic events, facility rentals, maintenance, and daily operations. Work cooperatively with the University of Maine at Machias and local community to positively promote the Fitness Center as well as the entire athletics department, its teams, and mission. Coordinate with the Associate Athletics Director to monitor the conduct of student-athletes and encourage and enforce full adherence to the UMM Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. Develop and monitor, in conjunction with Facilities Department, a facility maintenance plan for all aspects of fitness and athletic facilities. Foster a positive, inviting environment that encompasses all aspects of the Fitness and Athletics Department for students, staff, and local community. Emphasize and support the academic success of student-athletes, emphasizing the importance of keeping up with classwork, establishing rigorous study schedules, making satisfactory academic progress, and maintaining appropriate GPA’s. Coordinate with staff to ensure that a staff member is available to respond to emergencies on nights and weekends. Hold and participate in staff and committee meetings. Perform other reasonable related duties as needed.
Supervise mandatory study halls for student-athletes as needed Participates in college-wide events and/or programs and be visible on campus Provide appropriate responses to concerns and suggestions of facility patrons. Drive team van or bus, when necessary and appropriate. Supervisory Responsibility:
Supervise professional staff members, a classified staff member, coaches as necessary, and student staff, within Athletics and the Murdock Fitness and Aquatics Center.
The salary for this position is low-mid forties and based on experience and qualifications.

A solid working knowledge of daily fitness center operations and intercollegiate athletic rules and guidelines. Basic knowledge of all aspects of competitive athletics event management. Effective management, time management, organization, public relations, and written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work effectively with both internal and external constituencies. Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds. A commitment to diversity, collegiality, and civility. Willingness and ability to travel. CPR, AED, and Standard First Aid Certification
Certified Pool Operator
Valid Driver's License
Two or more years of experience in Athletics and/or Fitness
Certified CPR, AED, and Standard First Aid Instructor
Certifications in strength and conditioning, personal fitness training, and other related areas
Three (3) or more years of experience in athletics and/or fitness
Additional Salary Information: low- to mid-forties
