POSITION: The Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Tutor Coordinator.
DUTIES: Tutor Coordinator
Responsibilities for the Tutorial Coordinator include facilitating the tutorial and academic support sessions for all student-athletes. These duties include all hiring, training and evaluating of tutorial staff as well as timely scheduling of all appointments to support student-athlete success in the classroom. The position will work closely with each member of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes staff of academic counselors who are required to coordinate services for the respective students. The Tutor Coordinator will also serve as the academic counselor for a team. General supervision will be provided by an Associate Director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA). The program is located in the ASPSA under the Provost’s Office. Evening and weekend work is required.

A Master’s/Graduate degree and a minimum of two years of experience working with student-athletes in an academic support program or with undergraduates in a 4-year college or university setting; or a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience working with student-athletes in an academic support program, in an educational setting, or with undergraduates in a 4-year college or university setting.
Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student retention and familiarity with issues related to student-athletes’ academic progress and transition issues.
Nightly and weekend work required, all year round.
Strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with staff and colleagues.
Master’s degree preferred.
Experience working with diverse student populations and at-risk students.
Preferred experience coordinating academic support and or tutoring program(s) in post-secondary setting.

The Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA) reports directly to the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and is uniquely positioned to collaborate with faculty, the Department of Athletics and the campus community to support student-athletes as they excel in the classroom and compete in athletics. The ASPSA helps student-athletes explore their academic interests and abilities as well as provides numerous academic services including tutoring, secondary academic and career advising, assistance with University and NCAA eligibility, and coordination of academic honors and awards. In addition to the Director/Assistant Provost, the ASPSA staff includes 12 academic counselors, three learning specialists, and an office manager. ASPSA staff work together to guide and support student-athletes throughout their career at Carolina, beginning with an introduction to academics at UNC during the recruiting process through graduation and beyond. All incoming student-athletes, as well as those in need of more intensive academic support, participate in the My Academic Plan (MAP) program. Academic counselors and learning specialists work with each student-athlete to custom...ize his or her MAP based on academic preparedness, course schedule, and individual need.Tutoring is available to all student-athletes. The ASPSA employs over 90 tutors each semester with individual, small group, and large group sessions scheduled Sunday through Thursday.
