Ashland University is seeking applications for the position of Director of Academic Support Services for Athletics. This position will focus on improving retention, academic counseling, monitoring of academic progress, developing study plans, and helping student-athletes in various aspects of their lives.
Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities:
•Serves as the main liaison from the Athletic Department with academic counseling, the AU Writing Center and AU Career Services. Will also work closely with the registrar and the provost in tracking the academic progress of student-athletes and ensuring progress toward graduation.
•Creates academic plans for at-risk students that outline degree completion requirements. Monitors student-athlete progress toward degree completion and continuing education. Works with various offices across campus to build a program to assist student-athletes in making the transition from high school to college.
•Communicates with faculty regarding student-athlete progress issues and missed class time issues.
•Works closely with the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative to ensure that lines of communication between faculty and the Athletic Department are open and well established.
•Formulates academic success plans for student-athletes experiencing academic difficulty. Provides oversight for programming designed to prepare student-athletes for life after graduation (designing workshops, bringing speakers to campus, etc.). Requires the ability to manage budgeted dollars and prioritize events and finances.
•Serves as a mentor to student-athletes, implement and provide oversight to NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program and other pertinent NCAA and GLIAC programs.
•Works directly with the Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Compliance to develop academic recovery plans for ineligible student-athletes.
•Serves on Athletic Department executive staff which meets weekly. Serves on various campus committees and represents the Athletic Department at various campus functions and events.
•Attends selected NCAA and GLIAC meetings and workshops.
•Consults regularly with the Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director to formulate plans and strategies to construct academic policies for the Athletic Department.

Position Requirements: • Bachelor's degree is required; master's degree preferred. • Experience in counseling and/or academic counseling and working with collegiate student¬ athletes on the college level is strongly preferred. • Applicants should have knowledge of NCAA compliance rules and regulations. • Experience with NCAA eligibility certification for both incoming student-athletes and current student-athletes is desired. • Familiarity with NCAA software and programming and with a wide array of available post-graduate scholarships and opportunities. Familiarity with NCAA Champs/Life Skills program and other pertinent NCAA programs is desired. • Experience in creating and/or working in building an overall academic plan for an athletic department. • Ability to work non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends is required. • Requires travel during non-traditional work hours. This position will travel to GLIAC meetings, NCAA workshops, seminars and meetings and could also represent the Athletic Department at various events.
