Mary Baldwin University is a member of the NCAA Division III competing in the USA South Conference. We seek a visionary, collaborative professional prepared to lead a growing athletics program in alignment with the mission and character of the university. The ideal candidate will have successful experience working with the key constituencies of a small and highly diverse university community: students, coaches and athletic staff, physical education and wellness instructors, a cadet corps, faculty members and administrators, alumni and friends, conference peers and local and regional community members.
As part of a department-wide strategic planning effort already underway, Mary Baldwin University’s next Director of Athletics will continue the process of expanding our athletics offerings to include a full slate of coed athletic teams and the facilities to support them. These new athletic initiatives are enabling the university to build a vibrant co-educational campus with health and wellness at its core. Regionally, Mary Baldwin University is positioned to fill a growing need for competitive sports destinations in the Shenandoah Valley, and athletic facilities have emerged as an increasingly important choice driver for students and are critical spaces in delivering a high-quality student-athlete experience. In addition to strategic planning and managing the department’s administrative and financial resources, the Director of Athletics is responsible for directing athletic activities and fitness courses; recruiting and assessing current and prospective coaches and staff and providing an environment supporting personal and professional growth for employees through mentoring, regular performance evaluation, and constructive feedback; ensuring compliance with applicable NCAA, USA South, Title IX, and university policies, rules, and regulations; fostering a culture within the department that supports student and staff diversity; supervising the coordination of athletic events and fitness courses; revenue development planning and fundraising for the department; and other duties as assigned by the Provost of the university.
