Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Assistant Track & Field Coach. The Throws Coach will support the successful development of student athletes both in the classroom and on the field. The successful candidate will provide leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes at Christopher Newport University; assist with and provide the planning, organizing and coaching within the Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Program for throwing events; collect and analyze tactical and statistical data of opponent teams; design training plans and strategies; analyze performance of team members and adjust strategies as needed; counsel team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters; consult with University administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required; oversee financial aspects of the Track & Field’s Throws Program in consultation with the Head Coach for Track & Field; utilize independent judgment and render decisions on a daily basis regarding the Track & Field’s Throws Program, with little or no supervision on matters of importance; develop and implement operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise; screen and evaluate athletic qualifications of prospective recruits; coordinate with the Head Coach and the University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arrange meetings between prospects and the University; coordinate campus tours for visiting prospective players; assist with new student orientation activities; compile and analyze performance statistics for Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Athletes; plan off season physical training programs in accordance with NCAA regulations; study, evaluate and implement innovations in Track & Field strategy and equipment; coordinate purchases of Track & Field related equipment with the Head Coach for Track & Field; promote the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA; responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure NCAA compliance; represent the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events; participate in professional associations; perform public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; perform community relation activities; coordinate coach’s clinics and development camps; supervise dress code for any support staff and all team members; work a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position; develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and relations within the department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees; demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect; fully support the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely go the extra mile in providing service; and perform other duties as assigned.
A Master’s degree in a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree plus related coaching experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree is required. The successful candidate must have significant and successful demonstrated coaching experience in the throwing events; skill in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated organizational and time management skills; demonstrated skills using a personal computer; ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects; and possess the ability to foster positive internal and external public relations. Preference will be giving to candidates who have proven experience in recruiting successful student athletes consistent with NCAA guidelines; demonstrated experience in team management to include assistant coaches and others; experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations; experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support; knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations; and possess the ability to learn and apply conferences rules and regulations.
