Adelphi University is a nationally ranked, doctoral research university offering exceptional liberal arts and sciences programs and professional training. The head men’s soccer coach is responsible for the recruitment and retention of quality student-athletes. The head coach is recognized as pivotal to, and responsible for, the record of the program as it relates to competitive scheduling, university/community relations and the enhancement and academic achievement of the student-athletes.
The coach will direct all phases of the management and administration of the men’s soccer program, adhere to and enforce all policies, procedures and guidelines of the University and the athletics department, adhere to the compliance of all University, NCAA and other conference association rules and regulations, plus be directly responsible for the retention and graduation of the student-athletes while coordinating with the academic liaison. S/he will also be responsible for all areas of the sport’s budget including, recruiting, travel, and equipment, scheduling and conducting regular practice sessions as allowed by the NCAA and University guidelines, utilizing sound teaching techniques in the preparation of games and practices, coordinating all scheduling with the sport administrator, coordinating team travel with and submitting all budget requests to the Business Manager, formalizing and executing an alumni outreach plan with the sport administrator, and coordinating fundraising initiatives (events, individual outreach) with the AD and sport administrator for the purpose of enhancing the operating budget and endowed scholarships. S/he will also oversee the conditioning and training of the student-athletes in conjunction with the sports medicine staff and adhere to all policies and procedures within the University’s health and safety program, plus develop and implement strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at their best.
Other responsibilities include: identifying, evaluating, and recruiting potential student-athletes, initiating the process for recommending financial athletic aid, the National Letter of Intent and the non-renewal/renewal scholarship recommendations, all documentation for non-renewal of disciplinary suspensions, conducting the performance evaluation of the assistant coaches and as the primary recruiter, recommending to the Athletic Director all hiring of staff members, monitoring and coordinating the professional conduct of all coaches and support staff, participating in public relations activities and working closely with the University’s athletic communications, marketing and fundraising programs, attending athletic development/alumni functions, academic/athletic honors and other special events; and representing the sport program in the community as appropriate.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree, plus 3-5 years experience coaching at the college level preferred, fund raising experience preferred. S/he will comply with policies and procedures set forth by Adelphi University, the Northeast 10 Conference, and the NCAA. S/he will also be responsible for knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. If found responsible for a violation of NCAA regulations, will be subject to disciplinary or corrective action, including termination if appropriate. Also may be responsible for any act or omission that may give rise to a finding that the University has violated an NCAA regulation. Position requires working weekends and holidays. Position is required to attend university functions and serve as a representative of the university on various occasions including admissions, alumni and special events. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the abilities to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc., to be organized and pay attention to detail, and to supervise students and employees. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Windows and E-mail needed. Ability to work nights and weekends is required.
