The Head Football Coach is responsible for managing all aspects of starting and sustaining a highly competitive NCAA Division III Football Program including, but not limited to: recruitment and management of a coaching staff, recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes, and successful preparation, planning, and strategy for the development of a competitive intercollegiate football program.
Substantive experience as a successful football coach at the high school level or above is requisite, preferably as a college head coach or recruiting coordinator. It is important the coach has an understanding and practical knowledge of Division III athletics in order to build and sustain an NCAA Division III football program at Alvernia.
The successful candidate will display a record of accomplishment “on the field” as well as “off the field” having served as a mentor and coach to successful student-athletes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate and be able to communicate a commitment to the mission and core values and goals of Alvernia University. Strong organizational, supervisory, and team-building capabilities are required along with a bachelor’s degree.

Alvernia University is a Franciscan institution rooted in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions. True to its Bernardine Franciscan heritage, the University’s values of service, humility, collegiality, contemplation, and peacemaking have shaped its character and history for nearly 60 years.
Recently, the University has grown in both educational opportunities and enrollment. Alvernia’s student population of nearly 3,000 (1,500 FT undergrads) comes from diverse cultural, economic, geographic, and religious backgrounds. Alvernia offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees; seven master’s degrees; and doctoral programs in leadership (PhD), physical therapy (DPT), and nursing practice (DNP).
Alvernia competes under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division III level, the largest competing level of the NCAA. Institutions with membership at this level do not provide athletic scholarships. Alvernia’s nearly 350 student-athletes, compete in the Commonwealth Conference of the Middle Atlantic Conferences, commonly known as the MAC. The MAC was founded in 1912 and currently consists of 17 member institutions including Albright, Alvernia, Arcadia, Delaware Valley, DeSales, Eastern, Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, Hood, King’s, Lebanon Valley, Lycoming, Manhattanville, Messiah, Misericordia, Stevenson, Widener, and Wilkes. The MAC boasts 20 NCAA National Champions in a variety of sports over its 101-year existence.
Alvernia recently announced plans for its largest expansion ever with the creation of a 100,000 square foot academic and Recreation, Wellness and Health Sciences Complex, called “The PLEX” as the highlight of a new East Campus. The PLEX includes a 70,000 square foot field house that will support student recreation and varsity athletics programs. Major renovations to Alvernia Stadium and the school’s Physical Education Center are also planned to prepare for football and to enhance support for other sports teams that will also share the venues. Included are significant upgrades to locker rooms and additional stadium seating along with a press box and hospitality suite.
Reading, Pennsylvania is situated between the scenic Blue and South Mountains in southeastern Pennsylvania. Alvernia boasts a beautiful suburban campus on the outskirts of the City of Reading, the fifth-largest city in Pennsylvania. It features a reasonable cost-of-living with high rates of homeownership, substantial healthcare options, and a number of high quality education choices. Reading offers a mix of cultural entertainment destinations, such as the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, the Reading Public Museum, outlet shopping, minor-league sports, and concerts at the Santander Arena. The University is conveniently located an hour from Philadelphia and within an easy two- to three-hour drive of some of the world’s greatest centers of commerce, government, culture, sports, and entertainment: New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
