| Founded in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston, SC, the college moved to Greenwood, SC, in 1904 and was renamed Lander in honor of its founder, Samuel Lander. After a long period as a private institution, Lander became part of the South Carolina state system of higher education in 1973. Today, Lander University is a coeducational, state-assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year university with traditional liberal arts and science programs, and professional programs in business, education and nursing. Lander offers more than 60 areas of study, including 24 undergraduate degree programs and five graduate degree programs. Lander’s enrollment is approximately 3,000 with a student body representing 29 states and 17 foreign countries. Minorities make up 33 percent of the student body; 67 percent of the student body is female and 33 percent is male. With an average class size of 22, Lander has a student/faculty ratio of 17:1 with 138 full time faculty members, of whom approximately 72% hold a terminal degree in their field.
Lander predominately attracts qualified traditional full-time students but also welcomes non-traditional and part-time students. The goal of Lander athletics is to advance the mission of the University by assisting in educating student-athletes to live a life of meaningful activity, personal satisfaction, and service to others as a neighbor and a citizen. Lander also aspires to be a consistent top level athletic program at both the conference and national levels in all areas. As a highly competitive member of the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference, the University offers ten men’s and women’s intercollegiate varsity sports, along with a wide variety of club sports and an intramural program. Reporting directly to the President of the University and serving on the President’s cabinet, the Director of Athletics will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. Other positions reporting to the President include: VP for Academic Affairs and Provost; VP for Business and Administration; VP for Governmental Relations; VP for Student Affairs; VP for Enrollment and Access Management; and the VP for Advancement.
The Director of Athletics, as a visionary leader, will direct and supervise the administration of the men’s and women’s athletic programs and all administrative, operational, and business functions of the Department of Athletics in accordance with the policies and procedures established by Lander University, the Lander Board of Trustees, the NCAA, the Peach Belt Conference, and the President of the University. He/she will ensure the support of, and compliance with, NCAA and University policies along with a willingness to embrace and lead the changing nature of compliance in college athletics while continuing to build upon the current athletic program success. The ideal candidate will have experience leading a successful, multifaceted enterprise, preferably in intercollegiate athletics along with the aspiration to lead Lander athletics to consistently be a top athletic program at the conference and national levels. This experienced team builder will have excellent administrative, financial, communication, fundraising and interpersonal skills along with unquestioned integrity and character. Academic credentials appropriate for a higher education environment is required; advanced degree preferred.
