POSITION: Director of Sports Nutrition, 12 Month, 100% Academic Professional Appointment
PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY: Assess and counsel student-athletes on optional nutritional practices for exercise training, competition, recovery from practice, recovery from injury and illness, weight management, hydration and supplementation, as well as managerial oversight of all aspects of the Sports Nutrition program
DUTIES: • Assess and counsel student-athletes on optimal nutritional practices for exercise training, competition, recovery from practice, recovery from injury and illness, weight management, hydration and supplementation • Assess and counsel student-athletes on medical-related nutrition concerns utilizing appropriate medical nutrition therapy techniques for concerns such as disordered eating, anemia, diabetes, bone minerals disturbances, amenorrhea, dyslipidemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal concerns, food allergies and intolerances, and other medical conditions. • Implement sport-specific hydration protocols to prevent heat related illness and promote health through adequate hydration • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team charged with screening, treatment and prevention of disordered eating and eating disorders • Provide team-specific nutrition trainings and recommendations • Manage student-athlete blood work and supplementation for nutrient deficiencies as prescribed by team physicians • Evaluate sports supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy, and identify NCAA compliant products to be distributed and consumed by student-athletes including continual research of the changing sports supplement industry • Assess and counsel student-athletes on appropriate and legal use of dietary supplements, regularly banned drugs and restricted substances in compliance with sport governing bodies; e.g. NCAA, U.S. Anti-doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-doping Agency (WADA ) and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) policies • Provide consistent communication with coaching staffs, strength & conditioning staffs, athletic trainers, team physicians, mental health staffs, and administration regarding sports nutrition and sports performance related issues. • Assess and counsel student athletes regarding sport-specific and gender-specific recommendations for optimal body composition (via BodPod) and weight for good health and athletic performance • Develop, coordinate, and teach nutrition education, cooking programs and grocery store tours for student-athletes independently and in collaboration with student-athlete development programming. • Serve as a nutrition resources for coaches, sports medical staff, academic services staff, and others within the department • Serve as a member of the I-Perform Team, APPLE conference team, and other committees as needed • Meet with prospective student athletes as request by sport coaches • Oversee nutrition education material development, social media interactions, and athlete dining education material development • Coordinate sports nutrition education for DIA staff (research review, updated recommendations, etc.) as necessary. • Assist with team travel nutrition needs as necessary • Assist with football game day nutrition needs, on-site both home and away, to ensure fueling and hydration needs are met for optional performance • Facilitate the process of cross-disciplinary collaboration with relevant allied health care providers within the Sports Medicine department’s existing health care network by making referrals when appropriate • Work in cooperation with other on-campus Registered Dietitians (Housing, McKinley Health Center, FSHN) to ensure the best use of campus programming and facilities for student athletes • Oversee ordering, inventory, and procurement of goods through necessary vendors for all team specific fueling stations • Guide oversight of Illini enhanced fueling stations • Oversee undergraduate sports nutrition volunteer programs • Educate and mentor sports nutrition undergraduate volunteers and dietetic interns in sports nutrition as appropriate • Oversee and manage Sports Nutrition budget including all vendor relationships, procurement of goods and payment for all purchases • Cooperate in management of with student-athlete nutrition program, including menu advising, bi-weekly meetings, and all necessary communication • Maintain professional competency and skills required for professional practice, including but not limited to current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition. • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
