Under the direction of the Athletics Director, the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs will be responsible for strategic direction, oversight, coordination, leadership and active participation in the revenue generation and external functions of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Athletics Department (UHMAD). Manages all current and future revenue streams, evaluates and develops entrepreneurial activities, and promotes communication strategy with external and internal stakeholders, Solicits, negotiates contracts, coordinates and maintains corporate sponsorship for the department including signage of all major venues. Provides managerial supervision for marketing, promotions and how they integrate with media relations. Provides oversight for television and radio contracts and negotiations. Coordinates and maintains courtesy car program including solicitation, maintenance and further development of dealer relationships. Develops and coordinates intercollegiate athletic department’s licensing program including the UH Athletics “H” logo. Serves as liaison to evaluate the merchandising program for the department. Annually evaluate program and develop new strategies as appropriate. Monitors the sales of tickets and their relationship to the marketing program. Promotes the integration of the UHMAD with the university community to optimize internal and external relationships and cooperation Coordinates Speakers’ Bureau, including advertising and expanding program in local and state community and maintenance of records on public appearances of department staff and student-athletes. Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, business community, elected officials and donors. Cultivate and maintains effective relations with the private sector and various governmental bodies to promote and advance the support for the UHMAD. Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act. Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and of the affiliated Conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred or will occur. Provides leadership and direction to the Athletic Business Manager, Sports Information Director and Sports Marketing Director. Other duties as directed by the Athletics Director.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, education, physical education, recreation or related field.
Three (3) years of athletic administrative experience at the collegiate level, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated strong administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated successful and responsible participation in fundraising and marketing programs.
Demonstrated ability to negotiate contracts.
Demonstrated ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
Demonstrated commitment to gender equity and diversity.
Demonstrated fiscal integrity and expertise.
Demonstrated knowledge of management principles and practices. Demonstrated ability to create a climate of positive media relations. Demonstrated ability to successfully fundraise or cultivate relationships with key donors, corporate sponsors, or athletic booster organizations.
Knowledge of the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly competitive academic environment.
Knowledge of solicitation principles and practices.
Knowledge of laws, regulations and University administrative policies and procedures which relate to contract negotiation and bidding process.
Excellent communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to and thorough understanding of full compliance with the NCAA, conference and University rules and regulations.
Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawai‘i’s multi-cultural society.
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration or other related field; or terminal degree from an accredited college or university.
Proven record of successful relations with Executive Level, Legislative, and City and County elected officials.
Proven record of successful relations within a University community and with alumni and the general public.
Record of commitment to gender equity and diversity in athletics.
Sensitivity and perceptiveness necessary to function successfully in a multicultural environment.
Successful experience in managing a comparable athletics program or enterprise of equivalent or greater complexity, including long-range planning, and selection and supervision of athletic, administrative and coaching staff or the equivalent.
