Carthage College, home to one of the premier NCAA Division III athletic programs in the United States, seeks a dynamic Director of Athletics to build on our successful, resource-rich program. The successful candidate will bring to Carthage’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities exceptional leadership and management skills, competitive drive, and clear passion for the value of collegiate athletics in a student-athlete’s education.
Position Responsibilities: The Director of Athletics will report to the President of the College. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: embody the principles of servant leadership, empowering and advocating for staff and student-athletes. Maintain positive, productive relationships with faculty. Provide vision and administrative support to Carthage College’s Division III intercollegiate athletic program that supports 24 sports with more than 800 student-athletes. Lead a team of coaches in recruitment efforts to yield high-caliber student-athletes. Be responsible for developing plans, organizing, coordinating, and managing all aspects of intercollegiate athletics and the Athletics Department. Oversee the effective recruitment, hiring, supervision, mentoring, and/or evaluation of approximately 100 full and part-time coaches, administrative and support staff, volunteers, and student employees. Develop, manage, and ensure compliance with budget policies and procedures. Assist in fundraising, corporate sponsorship, promotions, and marketing activities, under the oversight of the Institutional Advancement and Communication offices. Create an environment that is supportive of diversity, equity and inclusion (including gender, race, religion and sexual identity). Maintain compliance with all required state, federal and league policies (Title IX, NCAA, CCIW, etc.). Prioritize the measurable academic success of student-athletes, including their retention and graduation, through focused efforts including collaboration with college services to support the social, physical, emotional, and intellectual development of student-athletes. Supervise athletic trainers to provide a comprehensive program of prevention and rehabilitation for student-athletes. Encourage and create an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism, collaboration, and respect among the staff, coaches, and student-athletes within the department and across campus.
Carthage fields 24 NCAA Division III varsity sports. Many of our teams compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, widely regarded as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the country. With nearly 800 student-athletes competing for the Red Men and Lady Reds, intercollegiate athletics makes up nearly 1/3 of the college’s student body. The College flies 115 banners from 24 different sports earned in the last 25 years, signifying both conference championships and top-eight national finishes.
Carthage has invested more than $200 million in facilities in recent years with a substantial proportion of those funds devoted to renovating and building new athletic facilities. Recent projects include a 2017 renovation of Art Keller Field and the surrounding track and the 2013 reconstruction of Augie Schmidt Field (baseball). Other facilities include Tarble Arena, the N. E. Tarble Athletic, and Recreation Center, and Smeds Tennis Center.

Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline
Five years of athletic administrative experience at the collegiate level
Thorough knowledge of the mission, role, and regulations of Division III athletics in a liberal arts educational setting.
A competitive individual with a strong work ethic and love of athletics.
Proven administrative and management skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to lead seasoned professionals as well as lead/mentor newer staff.
